The Making of a Righteous Man: Lessons from Lot

Genesis 13, 18, and 19 set Lot before God’s people as “the making of a righteous man,” but Lot’s righteousness does not look clean when his life is read up close. God’s grace is the only reason the New Testament can call him righteous, because Genesis shows a man with wealth, influence, hesitation, compromise, and a whole lot of Sodom in him.

Genesis 13 starts with Abraham pitching a tent and building an altar. Abraham’s tent means he had a house, but Abraham’s altar means God had a place in that house. Lot had tents too, and Lot had property, possessions, and success, but Lot never built an altar. That missing altar explains the whole condition of his life, because weak devotion and worldly desires always equal wrong decisions.

Lot’s eyes made the decision that his altar should have made. The Jordan plains looked good, well watered, almost like “heavenly caretakers had taken care of the land,” so Lot chose what he could see. Abraham walked by faith, but Lot walked by sight. Genesis lets that choice grow until Lot ends up sitting in the gate of Sodom, cutting big deals with big wheels, carrying influence, and making money in a wicked place.

Sodom becomes more than an address. Sodom becomes an environment. Lot went there for opportunity, but while Lot was at the gate doing business, Sodom was working on his house. The text warns that children are great imitators but poor interpreters, and even grown people with Bible, Holy Ghost, and years behind them are not exempt from the power and influence of sin.

Lot’s failure also shows up in his expectation. Lot thought he could change society without taking a stand against society. When wicked men surrounded his house, Lot tried to negotiate with people he called friends, but compromise had already made him weak. Evil does not get challenged by sitting down, staying silent, or going along to get along.

Lot’s example breaks down when judgment comes. Lot tells his sons in law that the Lord is about to destroy the city, but they think he is joking. His words had no weight because God had not been part of his everyday life. God cannot be treated like a spare tire, only reached for when life goes flat.

Lot’s entanglement reaches its deepest point when the angels say hurry, and Lot hesitates. Sodom was in Lot, and Lot was in Sodom. Sin had wrapped its tentacles around him until angelic hands had to drag him out. Yet behind Lot’s rescue stands Abraham at the altar in chapter 18, praying. God’s grace, working through the prayers of the righteous, is the reason Lot does not get left in the fire.

So Abram went up from Egypt, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the Negeb. Now Abram was very rich in livestock, in silver, and in gold. And he journeyed on from the Negeb as far as Bethel to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai, to the place where he had made an altar at the first. And there Abram called upon the name of the Lord. And Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents, so that the land could not support both of them dwelling together; for their possessions were so great that they could not dwell together, and there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land. Then the men set out from there, and they looked down toward Sodom. And Abraham went with them to set them on their way. For I have chosen him, that he may command his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing righteousness and justice, so that the Lord may bring to Abraham what he has promised him." Then the Lord said, "Because the outcry against Sodom and Gomorrah is great and their sin is very grave, I will go down to see whether they have done altogether according to the outcry that has come to me. And if not, I will know." So the men turned from there and went toward Sodom, but Abraham still stood before the Lord. Then Abraham drew near and said, "Will you indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? Suppose there are fifty righteous within the city. Will you then sweep away the place for the fifty righteous who are in it? Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?" And the Lord said, "If I find at Sodom fifty righteous in the city, I will spare the whole place for their sake." Abraham answered and said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord, I who am but dust and ashes. Suppose five of the fifty righteous are lacking. Will you destroy the whole city for lack of five?" And he said, "I will not destroy it if I find forty-five there." Again he spoke to him and said, "Suppose forty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of forty I will not do it." Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak. Suppose thirty are found there." He answered, "I will not do it, if I find thirty there." He said, "Behold, I have undertaken to speak to the Lord. Suppose twenty are found there." He answered, "For the sake of twenty I will not destroy it." Then he said, "Oh let not the Lord be angry, and I will speak again but this once. Suppose ten are found there."
