Bible Reading
1 Corinthians 12:4-27There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all.
[41:22]There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord.
[41:27]God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
[41:31]To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ. Some of us are Jews, some are Gentiles, some are slaves, and some are free. But we have all been baptized into one body by one Spirit, and we all share the same Spirit. Yes, the body has many different parts, not just one part.
[41:36]If the foot says, “I am not a part of the body because I am not a hand,” that does not make it any less a part of the body. And if the ear says, “I am not part of the body because I am not an eye,” would that make it any less a part of the body?
[41:51]If the whole body were an eye, how would you hear? Or if your whole body were an ear, how would you smell anything? But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it. How strange a body would be if it had only one part!
[42:02]Yes, there are many parts, but only one body. The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.”
[42:08]In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other.
If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad. All of you together are Christ’s body, and each of you is a part of it.
[42:11]John 10:10“The thief’s purpose is to steal and kill and destroy. My purpose is to give them a rich and satisfying life.”
[38:54]Ephesians 4:11-12Now these are the gifts Christ gave to the church: the apostles, the prophets, the evangelists, and the pastors and teachers. Their responsibility is to equip God’s people to do his work and build up the church, the body of Christ.
[42:38]Observation questions
- According to 1 Corinthians 12, what do spiritual gifts, different kinds of service, and different ways God works all have in common?
- What two wrong conclusions do Paul’s body illustrations correct: “I am not part of the body” and “I don’t need you”? [41:51]
- What kinds of people and ministry roles make up both the visible “front of house” and the often unseen “back of house” in the church? [48:27]
- In John 10:10, what does Jesus contrast with the “rich and satisfying life” he came to give?
Interpretation questions
- Paul says that each believer receives a spiritual gift “so we can help each other.” How does that purpose challenge the idea that gifts are mainly private abilities or ways to stand out?
- If God has arranged the parts of the body as he wants, what does that mean for a believer who assumes that their abilities, availability, or personality are not needed? [44:03]
- Ephesians 4 says that leaders equip God’s people for ministry. What could it look like for a church to depend on the whole body rather than expecting pastors, staff, or a few highly visible people to do everything? [42:38]
- Jesus promises full life, not an easy or trouble-free life. How can serving others be part of a rich and satisfying life even when it requires time, effort, or sacrifice? [39:14]
Application questions
- Where have you been tempted to think, “They do not need me,” or, “What I can offer is nothing special”? What gift, skill, experience, or practical ability might God be inviting you to offer to others? [44:44]
- Think about the people within five kilometres of the church building—people who know Jesus, reject him, or have never heard much about him. What is one way your small group could more clearly live as a church that exists for people not yet part of it? [40:28]
- Which hidden forms of service have helped you receive care, worship, welcome, food, safety, or community? How could you express honour and gratitude to people whose work is usually unseen? [46:46]
- Are you presently in a season when you need the church to carry you, or are you in a season where you can contribute? What would a healthy and grace-filled next step look like in your present circumstances? [58:14]
- Is there a ministry area that fits your interests, personality, schedule, or willingness to learn—such as NextGen, youth, welcome, worship production, adult ministry, helping hands, administration, food bank, facilities, kitchen, or special projects? What is one realistic step you could take to explore it? [53:59]
- Serving does not earn a place in God’s love; it flows from the place Christ has already given his people in his body. How would serving change if it came from gratitude and belonging rather than guilt, pressure, or the need to prove yourself? [43:32]
- You do not need to sign your life away in order to begin. What “one next step” could you take this week—having a conversation, trying a short-term role, helping with a project, or asking for help identifying your gifts? [01:00:28]
