Rewired: Think Possibilities

The Holy Spirit is named as the teacher who does more than pass along information. God transforms hearts, renews minds, softens what is hard, and heals what is broken. Faith is set apart from positive thinking because optimism hopes things may change, but faith is connected to the living God who can actually change things. Perspective becomes the real issue, because the same circumstance can look like an obstacle to one person and an opportunity to another.

Numbers 13 shows that 12 spies walked into the same promised land, saw the same fruit, the same fortified cities, and the same giants, but came back with two different stories. The 10 spies were not lying about the giants. The giants were real, the cities were real, and the problems were real. But fear saw those giants until God disappeared from view. Joshua and Caleb saw the same land, but faith saw God as greater than what stood in front of them.

The shift is stated plainly: kingdom leaders interpret reality through God’s promise rather than their own limitations. Fear sees giants. Faith sees God. Israel had already seen plagues, the Red Sea part, water come from impossible places, and food provided in the wilderness, but fear still kept them from trusting God for the promised land. That unbelief cost a generation 40 years of wandering, while Joshua and Caleb lived to enter what God had promised.

The microscope and telescope become the picture for spiritual sight. Fear lives behind a microscope. It magnifies today’s problems, failures, insecurities, lack, and mess until those things fill the whole field of vision. Faith lives behind a telescope. It does not deny obstacles, but it refuses to believe obstacles are the whole story. Faith sees God’s promise, remembers God’s faithfulness, and anticipates God’s future.

The telescope of faith also changes how people are seen. Empty chairs are not just financial problems, volunteer shortages, or signs of what is missing. Every empty chair can represent someone God loves who is not there yet, a marriage that could be restored, a child who could discover Jesus, a student looking for hope, or a neighbor who does not yet know they are deeply loved by God. Fear sees empty chairs. Faith sees future worshipers. The call is not to ask God to make the giant smaller, but to ask for a bigger vision of himself.
