Revival Through Obedience: Building a Strong Foundation
Devotional
Day 1: Seeking God's Presence for City-Wide Revival
In the unique move of God at Harmony, the focus is on seeking His presence in the secret place, which prepares us for a revival that will impact the entire city. This movement is not confined to the church but is meant to extend beyond its walls, bringing light to a world that is increasingly dark. As believers, we are called to be a city on a hill, shining brightly in our communities. This requires a commitment to prayer and intimacy with God, where we seek His face and not just His hand. By doing so, we align ourselves with His purposes and become vessels through which His transformative power can flow. [01:07:06]
"For thus says the Lord God: Behold, I, I myself will search for my sheep and will seek them out. As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness." (Ezekiel 34:11-12, ESV)
Reflection: How can you create a dedicated time and space in your daily routine to seek God's presence and align yourself with His vision for your community?
Day 2: Building a Strong Foundation in the Word
Biblical illiteracy is a growing concern, and without a strong foundation in the Word, believers risk falling into self-referencing and making themselves the gods of their own lives. 1 Corinthians 3:11 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the only foundation upon which we can build our lives. It is crucial for believers to be equipped with the truths found in Scripture, not just for head knowledge but for heart transformation and practical application. This foundation in the Word is essential for spiritual maturity and for standing firm in the face of life's challenges. [01:09:23]
"Therefore thus says the Lord God, 'Behold, I am the one who has laid as a foundation in Zion, a stone, a tested stone, a precious cornerstone, of a sure foundation: 'Whoever believes will not be in haste.'" (Isaiah 28:16, ESV)
Reflection: What specific steps can you take this week to deepen your understanding of Scripture and strengthen your foundation in the Word?
Day 3: Creative Engagement with Scripture
Engaging with the Word of God requires creativity and intentionality. Just as Brussels sprouts can be transformed with bacon, the Word can be made more appealing through journaling, using different translations, or reading in community. These creative approaches can help believers connect with Scripture in a more meaningful way, leading to greater spiritual growth and maturity. By making the Word more engaging, we can inspire a deeper love for God's truth and encourage others to explore the richness of Scripture. [01:21:28]
"Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O Lord, God of hosts." (Jeremiah 15:16, ESV)
Reflection: What is one creative method you can try this week to make your Bible study more engaging and enjoyable?
Day 4: The Importance of Discipleship for New Believers
Discipleship is crucial for new believers, and programs like Alpha provide the support and teaching needed for spiritual growth. It is essential to ensure that every new Christian is well-discipled and understands what it means to be a follower of Christ. This involves not only teaching biblical truths but also walking alongside new believers as they navigate their faith journey. By investing in discipleship, we help new believers build a strong foundation in their faith and equip them to live out their calling as followers of Christ. [01:32:35]
"And what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also." (2 Timothy 2:2, ESV)
Reflection: Who is one new believer you can reach out to this week to offer support and encouragement in their faith journey?
Day 5: Celebrating Freedom in Christ
Our freedom in Christ is a result of His triumph over sin and death. As we grow together in the Word and the Spirit, we celebrate the eternal life offered to us through Jesus. This freedom is not just for our benefit but is meant to be shared with the world. As believers, we are called to be ambassadors of hope, sharing the message of Christ's victory and the freedom it brings. By living out this freedom, we can inspire others to seek the same hope and transformation in their own lives. [01:35:00]
"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery." (Galatians 5:1, ESV)
Reflection: How can you actively share the message of freedom in Christ with someone in your life this week?
Sermon Summary
God is doing something truly special here at Harmony, and it's not just a generic move of God; it's unique to our city. This movement is a result of our obedience to the secret place, where we seek His face and not just His hand. As we continue to lean into this divine presence, we are preparing to spearhead a revival that will extend beyond the walls of our church and impact the entire city. The world is indeed getting darker, but the church is called to be the light, a city on a hill. However, there's a growing concern about biblical illiteracy within the church. Many believers are not grounded in the Word of God, which is the foundation of our lives. Without this foundation, we risk falling into the trap of self-referencing and making ourselves the gods of our own lives.
1 Corinthians 3:11 reminds us that Jesus Christ is the only foundation upon which we can build our lives. As teachers, we are passionate about equipping believers with the knowledge and truths found in the Word of God. This is not just about head knowledge; it's about heart transformation and practical application. We want to see believers grow in both the Word and the Spirit, as this combination leads to true spiritual maturity.
To make the Word of God more appealing, we need to approach it with creativity and intentionality. Just as Brussels sprouts can be transformed with a little bacon, the Word can be made more engaging through journaling, using different translations, or reading in community. Our goal is to ensure that every new believer is discipled well, that teachers are activated, and that there are ample opportunities for deeper learning in the Word.
We are witnessing new life at Harmony, with many coming to faith for the first time or recommitting their lives to Christ. It's crucial that we don't leave these new believers to navigate their faith journey alone. Programs like Alpha and our upcoming discipleship initiatives are designed to provide the support and teaching they need. As we continue to grow together, we celebrate the freedom we have in Christ, who triumphed over sin and death, offering us eternal life.

God is doing something special here. And, you know, I think sometimes, oh man, it's happening everywhere, but it's actually not. Like this might be happening worldwide, like God's doing something, he's moving. But I think what we're carrying in this city is unique. His spirit is truly moving here. And I think it's partly because of our obedience to the secret place, as Gideon says most weeks. [01:03:30](25 seconds)

But he's moving, he is here. And so I just want to encourage us just to continue to lean in, continue to go to the secret place, continue to seek his face. And he's going to continue to do stuff in this house. And I tell you what, it's not just for these four walls, right? It's going to go out. We're going to spearhead something in this city. I truly believe that. I don't like to throw around the word revival lightly, but I see it happening and I see it coming and I feel it in my spirit to hold on to our seats because he's about to do something special. [01:04:52](33 seconds)

But what we're seeing now more and more is that there is a biblical illiteracy that's taking place in the church. That more and more people don't know the word of God. They don't know the truths that are found in the word. They don't know that the word of God is the foundation for our lives. And the danger there is that, you know, we've heard the saying, if you stand for nothing, you'll fall for everything. [01:06:24](28 seconds)
Edit Clip
If we don't make the word of God the foundation for our lives, we fall into the trap of self-referencing. We fall into the trap of setting ourselves up to be the God of our own lives. And so as teachers, we are passionate about seeing every believer equipped in the knowledge and the truths that are found in the word of God. And that's our heart. That's our heart, really. 1 Corinthians 3:11 says that there is no foundation that has been laid other than the foundation of that who is Jesus Christ. He is the word. He is the one that we stand on. [01:07:04](42 seconds)

Get into the secret place. Get into that time with the Lord where it's just you and Him, where you're not seeking what He has for you. You're simply seeking His face. Because that's where you find love. That's where you find acceptance. That's where you find your identity. That's when you find actually the things of earth are pretty strangely dim as we look at his face. [01:08:21](25 seconds)

We want to see that you have something that moves you. It's moving, it's contextual, it's founded and based on the Word of God, but it's also practical, something that you can walk away with. And I've heard this said before, that too much Word you dry up, too much Spirit you blow up. Put them together, you grow up. And so we want to be a church that we're growing together, and that's the Word and the Spirit together. [01:09:46](29 seconds)

And, you know, sometimes we treat the Word of God like it's that dirty vegetable we don't want to eat. We kind of push it to the side of our plate. Maybe you were like me growing up, and you did the whole, like, eyes closed, you know, like, and you swallow that thing back. If that's you, I want to say, fry it. Chuck some bacon in there. Make it interesting. Make it appeal to your senses. [01:10:38](26 seconds)

Maybe you need to get some highlighters and some pretty pens, and you need to, like, just journal alongside your reading. Maybe you need to buy a different translation. No offense to the YouVersion, but maybe you need to get a physical copy of the Bible and have it in your hands. There's nothing better than a physical copy of the Word. Maybe you need to read the Word alongside your spouse. [01:11:03](23 seconds)

Number one is we are seeing so much new life here at Harmony. So many people that are coming to church that are getting saved. Some people have never heard the gospel. Some people it's a recommitment. It's actually incredible what God is doing. And, you know, I think the worst thing would be is if these fresh babies came to us and then we just kind of toss them back into the world and said, go for it. [01:21:39](26 seconds)
Edit Clip
You know, I think Alpha is amazing. That's actually pre-salvation. That's like I'm kind of on this journey of faith. What does it look like to be saved, to be a disciple? And then there's that crossover that happens. And once that decision has been made for Jesus, that's when we say we want to see you discipled. We want to see you understanding the word, understanding what it means to be a disciple of Christ and to walk out this Christian life. [01:22:06](29 seconds)
Edit Clip
Lord, we just thank you for your victorious triumph over death, your triumph over sin, over shame. Lord, that it was nailed to the cross, that it was taken to the grave. Lord, and we get to live in this freedom. It's for Christ, it's for freedom that you set us free, Lord. Lord, we just thank you for that. [01:32:24](24 seconds)

We love the verse, John 3, 16. It's the gospel summed up. It says that God loved the world so much that he gave his one and only son, that whoever believes in him will not perish but have everlasting life. And this is the life that is on offer for each of us today. [01:33:15](21 seconds)
