Revitalized by the Spirit: Embracing God's Nourishment
Summary
In today's message, I explored the concept of the "atmospheric river" as a metaphor for the spiritual nourishment that God provides. Just as California has been transformed from a drought-stricken land to a lush, green landscape due to the physical atmospheric rivers, so too can our spiritual lives be revitalized by the presence and guidance of God. This spiritual river is the Holy Spirit, which Jesus promised would flow from within us, bringing life and transformation. The Spirit is real and active, and it invites us to align our lives with the unseen, heavenly reality that God offers.
I emphasized the importance of recognizing that God's word, like rain, does not return void but accomplishes His purposes. This means that when we receive God's word, it should lead us to live with joy and peace, even amidst life's challenges. Contrary to some modern teachings that promise a life free from suffering, true spiritual life involves facing difficulties with the assurance that God is with us, providing a firm foundation and nurturing our souls.
I also discussed how living with the awareness of God's love and presence changes our responses to criticism and adversity. When we are secure in God's love, the criticisms of others become minor inconveniences rather than devastating blows. This security allows us to respond with grace and humility, trusting that our identity and worth are rooted in God's love.
Finally, I encouraged everyone to listen for God's voice in their daily lives. This involves being open to His guidance, whether it comes as reassurance, inspiration, or a call to action. By cultivating a habit of listening to God, we can experience the fullness of life that He intends for us.

Day 1: The Holy Spirit as a Transformative River
The Holy Spirit is likened to an "atmospheric river" that brings life and transformation to our souls, much like physical rain revitalizes the earth. This spiritual river is real and invites us to align our lives with God's unseen reality. Just as California's landscape is transformed by the physical atmospheric rivers, our spiritual lives can be revitalized by the presence and guidance of the Holy Spirit. This river flows from within us, as Jesus promised, bringing life and transformation. It is an invitation to experience the fullness of life that God intends for us. [02:08]
John 7:38-39 (ESV): "Whoever believes in me, as the Scripture has said, ‘Out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.’ Now this he said about the Spirit, whom those who believed in him were to receive, for as yet the Spirit had not been given, because Jesus was not yet glorified."
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need the Holy Spirit to bring transformation and renewal today? How can you invite Him to flow through you like a river?
Day 2: God's Word Accomplishes His Purposes
God's word, like rain, accomplishes His purposes and leads us to live with joy and peace, even in challenging circumstances. This peace is not the absence of trouble but the presence of God with us. When we receive God's word, it should lead us to live with joy and peace, even amidst life's challenges. Contrary to some modern teachings that promise a life free from suffering, true spiritual life involves facing difficulties with the assurance that God is with us, providing a firm foundation and nurturing our souls. [03:42]
Isaiah 55:10-11 (ESV): "For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it."
Reflection: How can you allow God's word to accomplish His purposes in your life today, especially in areas where you are facing challenges?
Day 3: Assurance in the Midst of Life's Challenges
True spiritual life involves facing difficulties with the assurance that God is with us, providing a firm foundation. This understanding counters the false promise of a life free from suffering. In the midst of life's challenges, we are called to live with the assurance that God is with us, providing a firm foundation. This assurance allows us to face difficulties with peace and joy, knowing that God is working in and through us. It is a reminder that our spiritual journey is not about avoiding suffering but about experiencing God's presence in the midst of it. [05:20]
2 Corinthians 4:8-9 (ESV): "We are afflicted in every way, but not crushed; perplexed, but not driven to despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed."
Reflection: What is one challenge you are currently facing, and how can you lean on God's presence and assurance to navigate through it?
Day 4: Responding to Criticism with Grace
Living with the awareness of God's love changes our responses to criticism and adversity. When secure in God's love, we can respond with grace, knowing our worth is rooted in Him. This security allows us to respond with grace and humility, trusting that our identity and worth are rooted in God's love. When we are secure in God's love, the criticisms of others become minor inconveniences rather than devastating blows. This awareness transforms our responses to adversity and criticism, allowing us to live with grace and humility. [07:11]
1 Peter 2:23 (ESV): "When he was reviled, he did not revile in return; when he suffered, he did not threaten, but continued entrusting himself to him who judges justly."
Reflection: Think of a recent criticism you received. How can you respond with grace and humility, rooted in the security of God's love?
Day 5: Listening for God's Voice
Listening for God's voice in daily life involves being open to His guidance, whether it comes as reassurance, inspiration, or a call to action. By cultivating a habit of listening to God, we can experience the fullness of life that He intends for us. This practice leads to a fuller experience of life, as we become more attuned to His presence and guidance. It involves being open to His voice, whether it comes as reassurance, inspiration, or a call to action. By listening for God's voice, we align our lives with His purposes and experience the richness of His presence. [09:34]
1 Kings 19:11-12 (ESV): "And he said, 'Go out and stand on the mount before the Lord.' And behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind tore the mountains and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind. And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire the sound of a low whisper."
Reflection: How can you create space in your daily routine to listen for God's voice? What might He be saying to you today?
Quotes
California as you may know where I live has been in a drought for a long time but not today it is carpeted with iconic green that is so Lush and beautiful it is as though the best of Rockford Illinois and California have been gathered together in a single season and it's because of this quite remarkable phenomenon that begins way out in the Pacific Ocean and water is gathered together and then it becomes Vapor so we can't see it but it's very real and it travels the atmospheric River I am told can be up to 375 miles wide and up to 1 000 miles long and it can contain 20 times the amount of water as the Mississippi River. [00:42:57]
So soil that was dry and Barren and Dusty and empty and parched has come to life when when a when a corn stalk comes into contact with water after being parched it is transformed on the inside with the vine the sap starts to run and then it extends on the outside and it grows and it bears fruit and this is what I want to talk to you about today God wants this for you there is a river whose streams May glad the city of God Jesus is the one that comes to him from their belly will flow rivers of Living Water by this he meant the spirit. [00:93:72]
And the spirit is real Dallas Willard writes in one of his books that the primary distinction in our day between cultures and between individuals is between people who believe that the visible world is all there is it's just stuff just matter versus people who believe there is an Unseen World an invisible world a Heavenly World a spiritual reality to which I must align my life and God said this is so God says this is so and here in The Fellowship of the withered hand where I can't I can't make the rain fall but God can. [00:132:59]
Where God says just as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and they do not return to it without watering the Earth causing it to Bud and flourish giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater so it is with the word that goes forth from my mouth now we think of the Bible as the word of God and it is but of course a word your word are your thoughts your the expressions of your mind and God is thinking God has thoughts and intentions all of the time and he has many for you and he wants to send them to you he wants to guide you he wants you to know that you are loved by him. [00:180:54]
And God says his word doesn't go forth without accomplishing his desire and achieving his purpose and the result of that if you're wondering he goes on to say is and you will go out enjoy and be led forth in peace how did you leave your apartment in your room your dorm your house today God's intent is his word comes to you is you go out rejoicing like a strong man that's going to run the race and then you be led forth through the day in peace now that does not mean that if you're in an interactive relationship with God your circumstances will be peaceful. [00:222:90]
Dallas writes about this in his book hearing God any voice that promises total exemption from suffering and failure is most certainly not God's voice in recent year innumerable spokespeople for God have offered ways we can use God and his Bible as guarantees of Health success and wealth the Bible is treated as a how-to book a manual for successful life in the way of the Western World which if followed will ensure that you will prosper financially that you will not get cancer or even a cold your church will never split or lack a successful minister in program. [00:264:78]
The correct answer is that rivers of Living Water come to me precisely in a world where things are quite difficult and things are quite painful and I have to experience uh enormous amounts of obstacles and setbacks and challenges what does come from that atmospheric River from the heavens are two great gifts one of them is an adequate foundation for my life sufficient nurture to allow me to be rooted and grounded in a way that my circumstances are not allowed to disrupt and then I can look at my own life and see is that the case. [00:320:88]
So God will tell me through his Spirit as God did to Jesus from that very beginning God God's word to Jesus at the baptism is you are this is my beloved Son and whom I am well pleased God sends the gift of his son and now if I'm actually living with that voice in my ear it will change the way that I respond to other voices that may have other messages for me somebody described it this way uh imagine someone has criticized you it may be difficult for you to imagine it's not for me imagine somebody has done that how do you respond. [00:367:97]
If I'm living being nourished by rivers of living by the atmospheric River where the spirit is speaking to me and I'm aware of the fact that somehow somehow through Jesus I am loved by God and he is watching over me and he will be with me then when I'm criticized by somebody else it's a paper cut and it will be a very good thing for me to take a look at it when I do get criticized and to see how do I respond and to the extent that I find myself getting anxious defensive stubborn melting down angry desire Revenge then I just say Okay God send me that atmospheric River one more time. [00:424:08]
Would you speak to me again words that tell me that I am your child and I'm loved by you and I can leave my reputation in your hand and there's so much there's life in that and when I don't have that one I think I've got to control what other people say and think about me it Withers and drives my soul my spirit so that spiritual reality today can give you an adequate Foundation which to live watch what happens when you face opposition or criticism and then secondly the second way in which uh I am Guided by that spirit is I actually do the things that God tells me to do. [00:471:06]
The invitation today is to listen to God from one moment to the next and in some moments the word that might come as a word of reassurance and of love in some moments what may come is an inspiration or an intuition take this step call this person finish this task take action in some area of your life rest today listen and assume that God is able to communicate with you and inspire you you don't have to be spiritually mature to do this he could do it with balaam's donkey he can do it with anybody. [00:564:24]
But I want to take a moment of silence right now for you to invite the spirit of God to speak to you and then just see what comes to your mind so let's be still for about 30 seconds and I will invite you to listen for God Don't Force anything just listen God would you speak to us right now.
