Jesus is never passive about his kingdom coming or his will being done. Christ looks for a people who make themselves available, not on the basis of convenience, but on the basis of obedience. The church Jesus is building must be a reverent church, a people who bring him out of the periphery and into the very center. Reverence is a profound blend of deep respect and loving submission, and it means that Jesus rules. He does not merely suggest. He commands, and his people obey.
Malachi’s covenant with Levi shows that covenant life calls for reverence and standing in awe of God’s name. God’s refining fire shows that Christ prepares his people for fruitful service by purifying, testing, equipping, and rewarding faithfulness with greater responsibility. Zechariah’s flying scroll shows that personal holiness matters a whole lot to God. The judgment against theft and false swearing reveals God’s seriousness about sin against people and sin against God.
Zechariah’s basket shows that corporate holiness also matters a whole lot to God. God wants to put wickedness in a basket, shut it under a lead lid, and take it away. Relational strife, unforgiveness, bitterness, criticism, accusation, gossip, and shadows carried in the heart do not merely make relationships difficult. Those things divide Christ’s church and destroy it. Paul’s warning to Corinth reveals how fiercely Jesus loves his bride and how seriously he regards those who damage God’s temple through division.
Grace does not leave God’s people stuck in sinful patterns. Grace teaches them to say no to ungodliness and to walk uprightly in the present age, even when obedience is a battle. Hebrews shows that sin entangles, while other things may be hindrances that must be thrown off. Christ wants his people to run with perseverance, fixing their eyes on him and seeking his kingdom first.
Faithful obedience positions God’s people for greater kingdom responsibility. Christ wants to do far more in and through his church, giving greater influence, authority, anointing, and responsibility for the lives of others. Prayerful availability, costly adjustments, and a life reoriented around God’s kingdom make room for God to work. Jesus calls his people to pull him into the center, honour his bride, lay aside what hinders, and run faithfully toward all that God has planned.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Reverence puts Jesus at the center. Reverence is not merely warm feelings about Jesus or respect for religious things. Christ becomes King when his commands carry more weight than personal preference, convenience, and self-rule. Submission is the proof that he has moved from the edges of life into its center. [49:26]
- 2. Personal holiness matters deeply to God. Zechariah’s flying scroll shows that God does not treat sin lightly, whether it is committed against others or against his own name. Holiness is not an optional extra for unusually serious Christians. Christ removes sin because entanglement keeps his people from running the race he has marked out. [55:38]
- 3. Honouring Christ includes honouring his bride. Relational offenses become spiritually dangerous when bitterness, accusation, and criticism are allowed to settle in the heart. Jesus does not stand casually beside those who take shots at the people he loves and purchased. Grace gives believers a way to work through real relational difficulty without destroying the unity of God’s temple. [64:11]
- 4. Grace teaches believers to say no. Grace is not permission to remain trapped in ungodliness or worldly passions. Grace trains God’s people for self-control, uprightness, and godliness in the middle of real pressure and conflict. Christ gives sufficient grace for the battle, so victory is not reserved for easier circumstances. [65:04]
- 5. Faithfulness leads to greater responsibility. Jesus prepares faithful people for more fruitful service in his kingdom. Prayer, obedience, and costly adjustments become places where God can entrust greater authority and influence. Christ wants his church to shape and shake nations, but that road requires perseverance and faithfulness with what is already in hand.
