Revelation: Unveiling Jesus and Living with Urgency

Summary

The sermon today at Freeport Wesleyan Holiness Church was a profound exploration of the book of Revelation, aiming to demystify its often misunderstood themes and messages. We began by acknowledging the purifying fire of the Lord and the importance of worship, setting a tone of reverence and openness to God's word. The focus was on understanding Revelation not as a book of doom and gloom, but as a revelation of Jesus Christ and His kingdom. This perspective shifts our attention from fear of the end times to the beauty and majesty of Jesus and His eternal kingdom.

The sermon highlighted the common misconceptions about Revelation, often seen as a book solely about the end times and the mark of the beast. Instead, it was emphasized that Revelation is about unveiling Jesus Christ and His ultimate victory over darkness. The book is a call to focus on Jesus, the Lamb of God, who is central to all of Scripture. It is a reminder that our lives should revolve around Him, and that our mission is to share His love and truth with others.

We were encouraged to approach Revelation with an open heart, asking the Holy Spirit to reveal its truths to us. The sermon also touched on the historical context of Revelation, written by John while exiled on the Isle of Patmos, and the significance of the number seven, symbolizing completeness and perfection. The message was clear: Revelation is not just about future events, but about understanding our place in God's plan and living in anticipation of Jesus' return.

The sermon concluded with a call to action, urging us to live with urgency in sharing the gospel, as Jesus' return is imminent. We were reminded that our responsibility is not to predict the end times, but to be prepared and to help others find their way to Jesus, the door to eternal life.

Devotional

Day 1: Revelation as an Invitation to Hope
Revelation is often misunderstood as a book of fear and foreboding, but it is, in fact, an invitation to hope and anticipation. It unveils the beauty and majesty of Jesus Christ and His eternal kingdom, shifting our focus from the fear of end times to the glory of His return. This perspective encourages believers to live with hope, knowing that Jesus' ultimate victory over darkness is assured. By understanding Revelation as a revelation of Jesus Christ, we are called to embrace the hope and joy that comes with the promise of His return. [55:22]

Revelation 21:3-4 (ESV): "And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, 'Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.'"

Reflection: How can you shift your focus from fear to hope in your daily life, especially when thinking about the future and the return of Jesus?

Day 2: Jesus at the Center of Our Lives
The book of Revelation highlights the centrality of Jesus Christ, the Lamb of God, whose sacrifice is the cornerstone of our salvation and victory over darkness. From Genesis to Revelation, the Bible revolves around Jesus, and our lives should reflect this centrality. By focusing on His love and truth, we are reminded that our mission is to share His message with others. This understanding calls us to live lives that are centered on Jesus, allowing His love and truth to guide our actions and decisions. [01:01:27]

Colossians 1:16-17 (ESV): "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

Reflection: In what ways can you make Jesus the center of your daily routine, ensuring that His love and truth guide your actions and decisions?

Day 3: Understanding Revelation Through Context and Symbolism
To fully grasp the messages of Revelation, it is essential to understand its historical context and symbolism. Written by John while exiled on the Isle of Patmos, Revelation uses symbols like the number seven to convey completeness and perfection. This understanding helps us see Revelation as both a literal and prophetic book, revealing truths for the early church and for us today. By studying the context and symbolism, we can better understand our place in God's plan and live in anticipation of Jesus' return. [01:02:44]

Daniel 7:13-14 (ESV): "I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed."

Reflection: How can understanding the historical context and symbolism of Revelation deepen your faith and help you live in anticipation of Jesus' return?

Day 4: Urgency in Sharing the Gospel
The imminent return of Jesus calls believers to live with urgency in sharing the gospel. Our mission is to introduce others to Jesus, the door to eternal life, and to be prepared for His return. This urgency is not about predicting the end times but about being ready and helping others find their way to Jesus. By focusing on His love and grace, rather than fear, we can effectively share the gospel and fulfill our mission as His followers. [01:23:02]

2 Peter 3:9 (ESV): "The Lord is not slow to fulfill his promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance."

Reflection: Who in your life needs to hear the gospel message today, and how can you share it with them in a way that reflects Jesus' love and grace?

Day 5: Preparedness and Faithfulness in Anticipation of Jesus' Return
Revelation reminds us of the ultimate victory of the church and the promise of a new heaven and earth. As believers, we are encouraged to be prepared and faithful, living in the spirit and truth. This preparedness involves remaining steadfast in our faith and mission, knowing that Jesus' return is imminent. By living in anticipation of His return, we can be faithful witnesses to His love and grace, helping others find their way to Him. [01:28:33]

1 Thessalonians 5:2-6 (ESV): "For you yourselves are fully aware that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. While people are saying, 'There is peace and security,' then sudden destruction will come upon them as labor pains come upon a pregnant woman, and they will not escape. But you are not in darkness, brothers, for that day to surprise you like a thief. For you are all children of light, children of the day. We are not of the night or of the darkness."

Reflection: What steps can you take today to ensure you are living in preparedness and faithfulness, ready for Jesus' return?

Quotes

1) "Sometimes what happens is we tend to focus so much on escaping death and escaping hell that we not focus on the beauty that is Jesus and the kingdom of God. And so what we are going to attempt to do is look at revelation, but from the perspective of we're looking at what does it say about Jesus? What does it say about the kingdom of God? And how does that relate to us here? For some of us who, online, they may not be in Trinidad and Tobago, you might be, you know, joining us from other locations. But for those of us who hear, you know, sometimes in the caribbean context, they read these things, and you're like, well, what I had to do with me. And so as we read the scripture, as we discuss the concepts, I want us to always keep in the back of the mind, okay, goddess, what does that have to do with me as a believer?" 2) "And so if Jesus is trying to share a revelation or to reveal something to us, to show it to us. We owe it to ourselves to actually pay attention to what it is. It's saying, amen. All right, so, um, I'm trying to figure out how to go with this. When I was thinking about how to communicate everything today, I had this brilliant idea to do a book report. Now, I did literature in school, so I kind of started falling in love with the idea some people winking at me with. But I love the idea of doing book reports. And since we're looking at the book of Revelation, I thought, okay, let's figure out who's the title? What are the themes? What's the genre? So I'm going to talk a little bit from that perspective today." [01:00:42] (51 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

3) "The main character throughout the book of revelation is Jesus, the lamb of God. And one of the reasons why his name is referenced so much throughout the entire book of revelation is because what Jesus did on the cross was so significant that it shaped everything in history in the past and what is to come. And so we see Jesus because most people were expecting Jesus to come as conquering lion of the tribe of Judah, right? You're expecting to hear the roar. You're expecting to see the angels because he is the lord of hosts. But in revelation, we see Jesus as the lambda, the lamb that was slain. And so it's a paradox because Jesus being the lamb was powerful." [01:18:59] (48 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

4) "And so it is our responsibility as believers to introduce them to the one who has the keys. Because we could talk from now till never. We can't control where people end up. But Jesus is the key holder. He is the key to life. He is the door. And so our responsibility is not to tell people they're going to hell. They already know that. Our responsibility is to tell people about Jesus. The door. You introduce them to the door. You show them the door. And so even as we think about the book of revelation, I want us to shift our attention, because a lot of times we focus on, okay, so there's war happening in Israel and Iran, and there's things happening right now in 2024 that are pivotal." [01:21:19] (55 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

5) "And so our response is, amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Lord Jesus. Come, Lord Jesus. Are we at this stage now? This is one of those things that I struggle with for a while in my christian walk. How do I say, come, Lord Jesus? When I like it here? I like. I like Christmas. I like surreal, I like parang. I like vacation time. I like to go to the beach. So. But if I say, come, Lord Jesus, what if Jesus meet me while I eat in a bacon shark? I don't know about you all. These are the things that really genuinely run through my mind. And so for a long time, people were saying, come, Lord Jesus. I remember Felicia Marion had a song, come, Lord Jesus. And at first I like it, and then I was like, nah, Jesus, hold on. I have some things I need to do now." [01:25:38] (51 seconds) (Download raw clip | Download cropped clip)

6) "And so our heart position, knowing full well that God has good plans for you, he ain't gonna throw you aside and just be miserable. God is a loving, kind God. So in our heart position, we should be able to say, yes, Lord. Come Jesus, come Jesus. Because our world needs Jesus, our country needs Jesus. And so we see Jesus in the book of revelation. One of the main things is that we see the struggle between the church that is here in the earth and the fight between all the kingdoms that come and. But at the end of it, we see the church, even though it is persecuted, the believers triumph and they overcome. And the promise at the end of this is that there will be a new heaven and a new earth and that the bride of Christ is reunited with Jesus and we get to enjoy a marriage supper." 7) "And so while I'm wrapping up here, while we have to understand all that happens in the book of revelation and what it means pertaining to us in 2024, I say in 2025 because I've already been thinking about 2025 things, and there are a lot of things happening globally that we need to position ourselves for and take practical steps to be the church. What that means for Freeport, Wesleyan, let me be clear. Some of these things like our pantry and the building that we're doing, we have to be prepared to reach out to our community when we did the safety training and the health stuff. That is because I really believe that God is positioning us so that when times of tribulation come that we as believers can be positioned to represent Jesus on the earth."
