[08:32]Verses 2–3: “I know your deeds, your hard work and your perseverance. I know that you cannot tolerate wicked people, that you have tested those who claim to be apostles but are not, and have found them false. You have persevered and have endured hardships for my name, and have not grown weary.”
Verses 4–5: “Yet I hold this against you: You have forsaken the love you had at first. Consider how far you have fallen! Repent and do the things you did at first. If you do not repent, I will come to you and remove your lampstand from its place.”

Verse 7: “Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to eat from the tree of life, which is in the paradise of God.”
Revelation 2:18–29Verse 18: “To the angel of the church in Thyatira write: These are the words of the Son of God, whose eyes are like blazing fire and whose feet are like burnished bronze.”
Verse 19: “I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first.”
Verse 20: “Nevertheless, I have this against you: You tolerate that woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophet. By her teaching she misleads my servants into sexual immorality and the eating of food sacrificed to idols.”
[18:25]Verses 21–23: “I have given her time to repent of her immorality, but she is unwilling. So I will cast her on a bed of suffering, and I will make those who commit adultery with her suffer intensely, unless they repent of her ways. I will strike her children dead. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds.”
[25:36]Verses 24–25: “Now I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, to you who do not hold to her teaching and have not learned Satan’s so-called deep secrets, ‘I will not impose any other burden on you, except to hold on to what you have until I come.’”
Verses 26–29: “To the one who is victorious and does my will to the end, I will give authority over the nations— that one ‘will rule them with an iron scepter and will dash them to pieces like pottery’—just as I have received authority from my Father. I will also give that one the morning star. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Revelation 3:1–6Verse 1: “To the angel of the church in Sardis write: These are the words of him who holds the seven spirits of God and the seven stars. I know your deeds; you have a reputation of being alive, but you are dead.”
[28:17]Verses 2–3: “Wake up! Strengthen what remains and is about to die, for I have found your deeds unfinished in the sight of my God. Remember, therefore, what you have received and heard; hold it fast, and repent. But if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what time I will come to you.”
Verses 4–6: “Yet you have a few people in Sardis who have not soiled their clothes. They will walk with me, dressed in white, for they are worthy. The one who is victorious will, like them, be dressed in white. I will never blot out the name of that person from the book of life, but will acknowledge that name before my Father and his angels. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Revelation 3:14–22Verse 14: “To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God’s creation.”
Verses 15–16: “I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth.”
[34:50]Verses 17–19: “You say, ‘I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked. I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see. Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent.”
[35:20]Verse 20: “Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.”
[35:38]Verses 21–22: “To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”
Observation questions- What strengths does Jesus recognize in the church at Ephesus before addressing its loss of first love? [08:32]
- According to Revelation 2:20–23, what was Jezebel teaching or allowing, and how did Jesus describe her response to the opportunity to repent? [18:25]
- What contrast does Jesus make between Sardis’s reputation and its actual spiritual condition? What commands does he give this church? [28:17]
- In the letter to Laodicea, what does Jesus say the church believes about itself, and what does Jesus say is actually true? [34:50]
Interpretation questions- Ephesus worked hard, persevered, and guarded sound belief, yet Jesus said it had forsaken its first love. What does this show about the difference between doing Christian activities and loving Jesus deeply? [11:10]
- The teachers connected with Jezebel and Balaam did not simply tell believers to reject Christ; they made room for their culture’s idolatry and sexual immorality. Why is gradual compromise often harder to recognize than an open rejection of faith? [23:03]
- Sardis looked alive to people but was dead in Jesus’ sight. What kinds of things can make a church or an individual appear spiritually healthy while lacking a real, life-changing dependence on Christ? [30:09]
- Jesus stands outside the door and knocks at Laodicea. What does the picture of eating together communicate about the kind of relationship Jesus desires with his people? [36:44]
Application questions- What competing love has been most likely to take your attention, affection, or dependence away from Jesus lately—such as success, comfort, family, money, entertainment, hobbies, or approval? What might it look like to put Jesus back in his rightful place? [11:44]
- Think about your early days of following Jesus. What practices, desires, or habits helped you grow close to him then? Is there one simple “first work” you could return to this week? [15:25]
- Where do you feel pressure to treat as normal something God calls wrong—at work, school, online, among friends, or even at home? How can you remain faithful to Jesus with both truth and humility? [38:11]
- Is there an area where you have been tempted to excuse or soften sin rather than call it what God calls it? What would honest repentance look like in that area? [26:25]
- Are there signs that your faith has become mostly routine—attending, serving, learning, or agreeing—without much hunger for Jesus himself? What would it mean for you to “wake up” and strengthen what remains? [27:33]
- In what ways can a person depend on church programs, good doctrine, emotional experiences, or capable leaders instead of depending on the Holy Spirit? What helps you personally stay open to the Spirit’s guidance and power? [34:07]
- Jesus is the lifeline for his people, not simply a name added to their own agenda. What door in your life may need to be opened more fully to him—your time, relationships, decisions, habits, fears, or future? [40:54]
