Revelation | The Final Chapter (week 10)

John sees an angel seize the dragon, bind Satan for a thousand years, and shut him in the abyss so he can no longer deceive the nations. John then sees Christ’s martyrs reigning, Satan released for a short time, the nations gathering for one last fight, and fire from heaven devouring God’s enemies. The devil’s final destination is not another chance to rule, but the lake of burning sulfur, where evil is judged forever.

Revelation 20 can feel confusing because chapter 19 shows Jesus winning, yet chapter 20 seems to introduce a thousand-year pause and another battle. Eschatology, the church word for beliefs about the end times, has produced real controversy because Christians read the millennium in different ways. Premillennialism sees a literal thousand-year reign after Christ returns. Amillennialism sees the thousand years as symbolic and understands Satan’s decisive defeat at the cross, with the church age marking Christ’s present reign. Postmillennialism expects the gospel to advance with great victory before Christ’s return.

Church history humbles every hard-line claim. Irenaeus, Justin Martyr, Augustine, Luther, Calvin, Jonathan Edwards, Billy Graham, Tim Keller, R. C. Sproul, and others have landed in different places while loving God’s Word and taking it seriously. Eschatology therefore becomes an opportunity to practice humility and grace. Disagreement can exist without division when believers refuse to treat secondary details as the test of faithful Christianity.

Revelation’s big message remains unmistakably clear. Christ came in the flesh, died to pay for sin, rose physically from the grave, and will literally return. Christ will destroy evil, bring final judgment, and dwell with his people forever in his kingdom. The church knows the destination and trusts the Driver, like kids in the backseat who may not know every turn but know Dad will get them where they need to go.

Christ’s return also calls for a response that does not change with any millennial view. The church is called to live as though Christ might return tomorrow, make disciples among all nations, flee sin, pursue holiness, and cultivate a rock-solid, authentic, unshakable relationship with Jesus. The Lord’s Supper anchors that hope in Christ’s broken body and poured-out blood, while looking ahead to the day his people drink the cup with him in the kingdom. The King is going to win.

Revelation 20:1-10

Verse 1: Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, holding in his hand the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain. [51:29]

Verse 2: And he seized the dragon, that ancient serpent, who is the devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years.

Verse 3: And threw him into the pit, and shut it and sealed it over him, so that he might not deceive the nations any longer, until the thousand years were ended. After that he must be released for a little while. [51:48]

Verse 5: The rest of the dead did not come to life until the thousand years were ended. This is the first resurrection.
