Revelation 21 and 22 sets before the follower of Jesus the great hope of coming home. John sees the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven like a bride, and the picture is breathtaking, not because of fancy stuff, but because God himself dwells there. The dwelling place of God is with man, and death, mourning, crying, and pain are gone because the former things have passed away.

The city shines with jewels, gates, walls, foundations, measurements, gold, and pearls, and all of it speaks of perfection, completion, security, and worship. The old temple, the holy place, and the whole story of Israel were always pointing forward to this final home. The city is both a place and a people, the bride and the home of the Lamb, gathered from every tribe and tongue and nation. The vastness of the city says, “woah,” but the real wonder is not the size, the gold, or the river. The real wonder is that God is there.

The Lamb is the temple, and there is no need for sun or moon because the glory of God gives light. The nations walk by that light, and the kings bring their glory into the city. Nothing unclean enters, and only those whose names are written in the Lamb’s book of life come inside. The warning is loving and serious. A person can build a home here, gather treasure, secure the nest egg, and still thirst for more. The true city comes only through the Lamb who has done what is required.

The river of life flows from the throne of God and of the Lamb, and the tree of life stands there with healing for the nations. Genesis once showed the way to the tree guarded by a flaming sword, but Revelation shows access restored because the curse has been dealt with through Christ. The servants of God see his face. Darkness is gone. Worship continues forever.

Jesus says, “I am coming soon,” and Revelation finishes with urgency, blessing, warning, and invitation. The Spirit and the bride say, “Come.” The thirsty are invited to take the water of life free of charge because Christ has paid the cost. The follower of Jesus lives unsettled in this world, not because hope is weak, but because home is still ahead. The final prayer is simple and deep: “Come, Lord Jesus.”
