Revelation 17 through 21 places the marriage supper of the Lamb right at the center of God’s victory. The wedding centerpiece draws every eye toward the bride and groom, and the text draws every eye toward Christ and his redeemed bride. Revelation brackets this great feast with two visions: Babylon, the prostitute, and Jerusalem, the Lamb’s bride. The contrast presses a real choice: the dragon and his prostitute, or the Lamb and his bride; the city of man, or the city of God.
The bookends of these chapters show Babylon’s destruction on one side and the dragon’s destruction on the other. Revelation 19 then erupts with heaven’s rejoicing: “Hallelujah, for the Lord our God the Almighty reigns.” God is victorious. The game is never out of hand. At the center of that victory, Christ is redeeming a people from every tribe, tongue, and nation, putting sin to death, silencing the enemy, and bringing his people into eternal covenantal union with himself.
The marriage supper of the Lamb reveals that Christ does not merely rescue individuals from trouble. The Lamb makes a bride. Christ grants her fine linen, bright and pure, and the linen is the righteous deeds of the saints. The church therefore stands at the epicenter of God’s victorious work in the world: a people purchased by blood, washed by the Word, and presented to Christ without spot or blemish.
The wilderness exposes why this choice matters. The wilderness removes comfort and reveals what people really believe about God, themselves, and the world. Egypt can look attractive when life gets hard, even when Egypt means slavery. Babylon can look compelling when the pleasures, powers, and comforts of the world promise quick relief. Yet the dragon eventually devours the very prostitute that he makes alluring. The call of the world is self-seeking, destructive, and empty.
The Lamb stands in total contrast. The beast takes everything, but the Lamb gives everything. Christ gives himself for his bride, sanctifies her, and makes her ready for the feast. The way of the Lamb is hard, painful, and sometimes wearying, but it leads to the greatest feast and the most glorious celebration that will ever take place.
The work of building up Christ’s body can feel slow, frustrating, and unfinished, like arranging a wedding centerpiece that refuses to come together. The church, however, represents eternal beauty, intimacy, and delight. Christ never grows weary in his work, and the church is invited to participate in work that he has already perfectly begun and promises to complete.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God’s victory is never uncertain. God’s reign does not rise and fall with the visible strength of Babylon or the apparent weakness of the church. Revelation insists that the game is never out of hand, even when faithfulness looks costly and small. The marriage supper stands as the completed picture of God’s victory. [14:44]
- 2. The wilderness reveals misplaced desires. The wilderness removes comforts and exposes the pull of Egypt still lodged in the heart. Babylon becomes most alluring when suffering makes immediate relief feel necessary. The wilderness therefore calls for deeper faithfulness, not a retreat into false hopes for salvation. [23:44]
- 3. Babylon promises comfort, then destroys. The dragon’s allure offers power, pleasure, security, and quick rewards. The dragon, however, finally devours the very prostitute that represents those promises. The world’s call leaves its followers desolate, empty, and alone. [25:52]
- 4. The Lamb gives everything to his bride. The beast takes, but Christ gives himself up for his people. The Lamb cleanses, sanctifies, and presents his bride in splendor, clothed in righteousness that he grants. Christ’s covenant love creates a security that Babylon can never offer. [27:34]
- 5. Building the church is eternal work. The body of Christ can feel frustrating, slow, and costly to build. The church, however, is the redeemed bride at the center of God’s redemptive purpose. Christ’s tireless work means every faithful act participates in something he promises to finish. [36:49]
