Paul's mission in Ephesians 3:7-13 highlights the dual nature of revelation, which involves both the objective communication of God's divine plan and the subjective enlightenment of hearts. This dual approach underscores the necessity of divine intervention in understanding spiritual truths. While Paul communicates the gospel through his writings and teachings, it is the Spirit that enlightens hearts, allowing individuals to truly grasp the hope and riches of their calling. Without the Spirit’s illumination, the message remains incomplete, emphasizing the importance of both proclaiming the gospel and praying for the Spirit’s work in the hearts of listeners. [05:24]
Ephesians 1:17-18 (ESV): "That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and of revelation in the knowledge of him, having the eyes of your hearts enlightened, that you may know what is the hope to which he has called you, what are the riches of his glorious inheritance in the saints."
Reflection: In what areas of your life do you need the Spirit's illumination to understand God's plan more fully? How can you invite the Spirit to enlighten your heart today?
Day 2: The Unsearchable Riches of Christ
The gospel reveals the unsearchable riches of Christ, which are available to all, transcending ethnic and cultural barriers. This inclusivity is a testament to God’s expansive grace and the depth of His love for humanity. The boundless riches of Christ are not limited to a select few but are offered to everyone, regardless of their background. This revelation challenges believers to embrace the fullness of Christ's riches and to share this message of inclusivity and grace with others, reflecting the heart of God for all people. [00:34]
Colossians 1:27 (ESV): "To them God chose to make known how great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory."
Reflection: How can you actively share the unsearchable riches of Christ with someone from a different background or culture this week?
Day 3: God’s Sovereign Plan
The divine plan, hidden for ages, is rooted in God’s sovereignty as Creator. This ensures that nothing can thwart His purposes, providing believers with assurance and hope in the fulfillment of His promises. Since God is the originator of the plan, everything in creation serves this divine purpose, ensuring that the plan will ultimately be fulfilled. This assurance allows believers to rest in the unassailable nature of God’s plan, trusting that His purposes will prevail despite any external circumstances. [12:57]
Isaiah 46:10 (ESV): "Declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose.’"
Reflection: What current situation in your life do you need to trust God’s sovereign plan for? How can you remind yourself of His unchanging purposes today?
Day 4: The Role of Prayer in Revelation
Paul emphasizes the importance of prayer in the process of revelation. While he can communicate the gospel, it is through prayer that he seeks God’s intervention to enlighten hearts, demonstrating the necessity of divine aid in spiritual understanding. Prayer becomes a vital tool in seeking God’s help to open the eyes of the spiritually blind, acknowledging that human effort alone is insufficient. This reliance on prayer encourages believers to actively seek God’s presence and guidance in their spiritual journey, trusting in His ability to reveal deeper truths. [06:41]
James 1:5 (ESV): "If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him."
Reflection: How can you incorporate prayer into your daily routine to seek God’s wisdom and revelation? What specific area of your life do you need to pray for divine insight?
Day 5: The Grand Design of Redemption
The mystery of Jew and Gentile unity is part of a larger plan to unite all things in Christ. This cosmic vision underscores the comprehensive scope of God’s redemptive work, which encompasses all creation. The grand design of redemption reveals God’s intention to bring everything under the lordship of Christ, highlighting the ultimate goal of His divine plan. This vision invites believers to participate in God’s redemptive work, recognizing their role in the unfolding of His cosmic purpose and the unity of all things in Christ. [09:24]
Colossians 1:19-20 (ESV): "For in him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of his cross."
Reflection: How can you actively participate in God’s grand design of redemption in your community? What steps can you take to promote unity and reconciliation in Christ today?
Sermon Summary
In our exploration of Ephesians 3:7-13, we delve into the profound responsibility bestowed upon Paul to illuminate the divine mystery hidden for ages. This mystery, now revealed, is not merely about the inclusion of Gentiles as fellow heirs with the Jews but is part of a grander divine plan. This plan, conceived before the foundation of the world, is to sum up all things in Christ, both in heaven and on earth. Paul’s mission is twofold: to preach the unsearchable riches of Christ and to bring to light this divine plan. This task involves both an objective revelation, which Paul receives and communicates through his writings and teachings, and a subjective illumination, which requires the enlightening of hearts through the Spirit.
Paul’s role is not just to convey information but to facilitate a transformation. He is tasked with opening the eyes of the spiritually blind, a task that he acknowledges cannot be accomplished by human effort alone. It requires divine intervention, where God enlightens the hearts of individuals to truly grasp the hope and riches of their calling. This dual aspect of revelation underscores the necessity of both proclaiming the gospel and praying for the Spirit’s work in the hearts of listeners.
The mystery of the gospel, which includes the unification of Jews and Gentiles, is part of a larger divine strategy. This strategy is rooted in God’s sovereignty as the Creator of all things. Since God is the originator of the plan, nothing external can alter or thwart it. Everything in creation serves this divine purpose, ensuring that the plan will ultimately be fulfilled. This assurance provides believers with confidence in the unassailable nature of God’s plan, which is orchestrated through the gospel and culminates in the summation of all things in Christ.

Sermon Clips
To me though I am the very least of all the saints this grace was given to preach as gospel to the gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for ages in God who created all things. [00:22:56]
There are two senses in which Paul is charged to bring something to light you see the first one in the preceding paragraph where it says assuming you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me how the mystery was made known made known to me by the revelation as I have written briefly. [00:176:64]
So to know the revelation you need a spirit of revelation or you need to have the eyes of your hearts enlightened so a second meaning here is supernatural light in the heart so when Paul says his task as an apostle is to bring to light for everyone he means I have an objective task and I have a subjective task that I carry out by prayer. [00:298:08]
I ask God to do what I cannot do which sheds a lot of light by the way on this commission that Jesus gave to Paul right at his conversion and commission in acts 26 17 Jesus says to Paul I am sending you to open their eyes so that they may turn from darkness to light from the power of satan to God. [00:340:72]
So don't ever think that when I send you to bring to light for everyone what is the plan that it's all up to you all you have to do is write a letter or preach a sermon and it's done no it's not done it's half done then this part is half done our job is to give objective truth to people. [00:412:40]
The plan of the mystery in other words not just to reveal a mystery we know what the mystery is this mystery is the gentiles are fellow heirs members of the same body partakers of the promise through the gospel the promise in Christ through the gospel so that's the mystery gentiles are fellow heirs with the Jews in the inheritance. [00:457:919]
But there's a plan and it's bigger than that particular aspect of the mystery and it involves that bigger dimension and it involves how it comes about and that's what Paul says his job is he has received the ministry of the gospel with the specific charge to herald unsearchable riches and to bring to light the plan of the mystery. [00:489:84]
The plan is for the fullness of time to sum up all things in Christ things in heaven and things on earth and so the mystery of Jew and Gentile being included in one one body in Christ with Christ as the head of that body and thus summing up all the redeemed in the one body of Christ is a part of the plan. [00:568:48]
But the plan is larger than that and includes all things things in heaven things on earth Christ will be the head of it all and the plan includes how it comes about through the gospel through the blood through the torn flesh through the cross through the tearing down of the dividing wall of hostility through the ending of the law. [00:597:12]
The plan and that plan was hidden for ages in God and I think the reason he probably underlines that again just like he had said up here that it had not been revealed which was not made known to the sons of men in previous generations I think the reason he probably repeats that here in God is because perhaps many tribes and gentiles would say why hasn't why wasn't that enacted earlier. [00:641:76]
It's been hidden in God for the fullness of time finally why does he say who created all things why does he at this very point of hiding the mystery and the plan for ages in God draw attention to the fact that the God who's concealing the plan for ages created all things I have two suggestions what you do when you have a question like that is just stop and ponder. [00:688:959]
Since God is the creator he is sovereign over all things because he made all things and he made all things according to plan because he's a wise God and therefore everything serves the plan and the plan of the mystery cannot be defeated the plan for how the mystery of Jew and Gentile saved in one body will come about through the gospel.
