Psalm 16 prays, “Preserve me, O God,” and Psalm 32 calls God a hiding place who preserves from trouble and surrounds with songs of deliverance. Psalm 121 says the Lord preserves going out and coming in, and that word carries the picture of a shepherd guarding sheep or a watchman guarding a city. God is not asleep on the wall, and the believer is not left alone in the jungle.

God’s preserving work does not mean trouble never shows up. God’s preserving work means he has his people even when the trouble is loud, confusing, and taking longer than anybody wanted. The father in the jungle story had been standing there all night, but the boy did not know it. God does better than that, because he says straight up, “I got you,” and in the New Testament he is not just with his people, he moves into them.

Proverbs says discretion will preserve, understanding will keep, and wisdom delivers from evil paths, perverse words, crooked ways, and seduction. Perversity is not just being weird or unpopular. Perversity is twisting away from what God says is straight. The man who speaks perverse things may sound close to the truth, but close is not truth. Scripture is the real money, and when the believer has handled the real thing long enough, the counterfeit feels wrong in the hand.

Philippians calls the generation crooked and perverse, yet the children of God shine as lights by holding fast the word of life. Repentance changes the mind, and a changed mind turns the direction. Perversity tries to spin a person back around, so that repentance gets repented of and the old road starts looking good again. That dizziness comes from refusing to pick the lane and go God’s way.

Perseverance means staying under pressure instead of escaping it. Romans says tribulation can produce perseverance, perseverance character, and character hope, but tribulation only produces that when the heart does not quit. Hebrews points to Jesus, who endured the cross for the joy set before him and prayed in the garden, “not my will, your will be done.” Revelation says faithfulness keeps being faithful, even unto death.
