Deceivers and Doubters: Finding Assurance in the Resurrection

Matthew 28 brings the deceivers and the doubters right up next to the empty tomb. The guards had been set there to watch a dead man, which already shows how strange the whole thing was, and then fear made those keepers shake and become as dead men. The watch came into the city and told the chief priests all the things that were done, the earthquake, the angel, and most of all, the empty tomb. The chief priests had their moment of truth right there in front of them, ta da, all the evidence they ever needed.

Matthew 27 had already shown their hypocrisy. The religious leaders had mocked Jesus and said, “Let him come down from the cross, and we will believe him.” But Jesus never said he would come down from the cross. Jesus said he would die and rise again. The leaders knew that promise better than the disciples did, and yet when the truth stood before them, they chose a lie. Their counsel produced deceit, bribery, and a story that did not even make sense.

The lie was rough to hear. All the soldiers supposedly slept, even though sleeping on watch was punishable by death. All the soldiers supposedly slept while several men rolled away a huge stone. And if they were all asleep, they could not possibly know the disciples stole the body. Satan’s way showed up clearly there, because truth was proclaimed in the first part of Matthew 28, and then deceit was purchased in the next part.

The religious leaders refused the truth because they did not want Christ’s authority. Their concern for man’s laws, their own righteousness, their position, their influence, their money, and their prestige all flowed out of a wicked heart. John 3 says men love darkness rather than light, and John 8 says the devil is a liar and the father of it. Pride stood at the root, because they did not want to admit they were wrong.

The disciples’ doubts came from another place. Mark 16 and Luke 24 show them mourning, weeping, skeptical, and slow to believe the women who reported the resurrection. Their doubt had the reality factor in it, and also the fear of getting hurt again. They had trusted that Jesus would redeem Israel, and now hope felt dangerous. But when Jesus opened the Scriptures, their hearts burned within them, and the doubts began to burn away.

God’s word meets doubt with truth, not with shame. The father in Mark 9 cried, “Lord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief,” and Jesus answered humble dependence. The believer’s assurance rests not in holding on tightly enough, but in the Father holding on. When the heart condemns, God is greater than the heart, and Christ still has the words of life.
