He Restores My Soul: Following the Good Shepherd

Psalm 23 is not speaking from the shepherd’s side first. The sheep are talking, and the sheep are saying, “The Lord is my shepherd.” The whole thing starts with a choice. The sheep choose the Lord, and then the sheep testify to what he does: he makes, he leads, he restores.

“He restores my soul” gets bigger when the image of a cast sheep comes into view. A cast sheep has rolled onto its back, lost contact with the ground, and cannot get up. Death is certain unless the shepherd finds it first. The good shepherd does not stand far off and say, “Try harder.” The good shepherd comes, turns the sheep over, massages life back into its legs, and carries it if it cannot walk.

Jesus is that good shepherd. Lost sheep are not an annoyance to him. Luke 15 shows heaven rejoicing when one sinner repents because Jesus loves saving sheep that are helpless, hopeless, and as good as dead in sin. “Cast down, but not destroyed” makes sense because the shepherd has come looking. Jesus left heaven to find cast sheep, pay their penalty, and restore their soul.

Psalm 23 also says, “He leads me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.” Sheep are creatures of habit. Left alone, sheep will walk the same trails until they become ruts, eat the same grass until the roots are gone, and sleep in the same spots until parasites take over. The good shepherd moves them before their habits destroy them.

The same sheep picture fits sinful habits. Sin may feel comfortable because it is familiar, but familiar does not mean safe. The good shepherd is not okay with sin, and he will point out the habits that are hurting his sheep. Correction may hurt in the moment, but a good father does not let his children wallow in what destroys them.

“For his name’s sake” means the sheep’s life is not mainly about the sheep. The sheep benefit the shepherd. The life restored by Jesus is meant to point back to Jesus. He died so that his sheep could live for him.

Following the good shepherd is not accidental, casual, or partial. Jesus calls his sheep to deny themselves, take up the cross, be different from the crowd, put others first, accept the places he leads, seek his will first, and follow him 100% of the time. The good shepherd restores the soul, leads in righteousness, and calls for courageous faith that trusts his voice completely.
