Restoration Through Accountability: Embracing Church Discipline

Devotional

Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

"Church discipline is about confronting someone living in open, unrepentant sin. The purpose is to encourage repentance, but removing the person from church fellowship if he or she fails to repent. I don't know of a church anywhere that practices that. I don't know of a church that practices that. Church discipline is rare and it ought to be the very last resort. It ought not be the first thing we come to, but it ought to be the very last resort." [00:45:52]

"Church discipline is not for people who are progressing, sometimes even very slowly, towards Christ. But it's for church members living in open, unrepentant sin that is known, commonly reported in the church. Now look at me and listen. Most of us here, not all, but most of us here have been members of other churches. And most of us have lived long enough to know of shenanigans that's gone on in the church." [00:46:38]

"Paul rebukes the Corinthian leadership for not disciplining the unrepentant sinner. Stay with me. Church discipline happens for two reasons. Number one, the correction of a person committing open, unrepentant sin. You see how I keep repeating that? Because that's the thing that you look for. It's not something that's secret. It's open, unrepentant sin with a goal of restoration and redemption." [00:49:35]

"Problems arise when churches excuse rather than discipline. An unrepentant sinner under the banner of well, I just love them. I just love them. We do love them. And we love them so much we need to tell them the truth. Paul rebukes the Corinthian leadership for not disciplining the unrepentant sinner. Stay with me. Church discipline happens for two reasons." [00:49:57]

"How much better would it have been had we dealt with those things and tried to bring a brother back rather than just sweep it under the carpet? You know what happens? You know what happens sometimes in ministry? A guy messes up over here and they just move him to another place so he can mess up over there. Are you listening? Listen, I understand people get messed up in their life. I understand it." [00:47:31]

"Now, the truth is this. Now, let me get to this other word, adultery. Here's what adultery means. The breaking of the covenant. That's what adultery, adultery. That's the reason God can look at Israel and call them an adulterous generation. Why? They were covenant breakers. So when you commit, when someone commits adultery, they break the covenant of marriage." [00:43:48]

"Jesus demonstrated compassion without compromise to the woman that was caught in the act of adultery in John chapter 8. Watch this now. Jesus told the men who were without sin among you, let him cast the first stone. He said, these guys are standing around, they brought this woman. It was a set up, you know that. And so they brought this woman and Jesus said to them, okay guys, if you don't have anything in your background that's sinful, pick up a rock and throw it at her." [01:03:59]

"Jesus answered the woman, if anyone was left to condemn you, and she said no, and he said to her, neither do I condemn you. Oh, there's grace. Amen? There's grace. But there's law. Go and sin no more. You see, it takes both sides of that. Neither do I condemn thee, Jesus said. I don't condemn you. But now look, when you leave this place right here," [01:04:46]

"How do you maintain connection with unrepentant people without losing your biblical boundaries? Continue to reach out, but stop preaching. Continue to reach out to them, but stop preaching. Share the word with them as God leads you. And listen, it's important that you, that you recognize that it's the Holy Spirit that brings conviction. You're not the one that brings conviction. You're the one that brings connection." [01:08:28]

"Never underestimate the power of prayer. Do you know why you have accepted this message today? There are people in this building who are praying for you right now. They're not in the service. They have chosen to be in a prayer room right this minute, and they're praying for me, and for you. That's the reason, you know, when the Holy Spirit was ringing that bell in your life," [01:11:04]

"Sometimes we have to wait many years before we see that request answered. And never underestimate the power of prayer. the power of prayer. the power of obedience. Two things. Ask and be obedient. The Corinthian church removed this sexually immoral man from their fellowship with the church. They did it." [01:12:53]

"Deliver such in wonder to Satan for the destruction of the flesh that the spirit might be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Did you know, though, we find some encouragement by the Apostle Paul over in 2 Corinthians 2, verses 6 through 8. Let me read those for you. And then I'm done. Sufficient to such a man is this punishment. Two years. It's one year later." [01:13:51]
