Resting in God's Trust: A Path to Peace

Summary

In our journey through Proverbs 3:5-6, we explore the profound theme of trust in God. Trusting in the Lord with all our heart is not just a command but an invitation to experience a life of peace and rest, much like Jesus, who was described by Dallas Willard as "relaxed." Despite the chaos and challenges of life, Jesus exemplified a non-anxious presence, rooted in His unwavering trust in His Heavenly Father. This trust is not passive but active, requiring us to lean not on our own understanding but to rest our entire being on God.

The essence of trust, as depicted in Proverbs, is akin to leaning or relaxing on something sturdy. Just as we might lean against a wall or rest on a cane, trusting God means placing our full weight on Him, confident in His strength and reliability. This trust is foundational to wisdom, as it aligns our lives with God's precepts, providence, and person.

Firstly, trusting in God's precepts involves obeying His commands, even when they challenge our understanding or desires. Obedience is an act of trust, acknowledging that God's directives are for our ultimate good. Secondly, trusting in God's providence means recognizing His sovereign control over our lives. While our choices matter, God's overarching plan prevails, inviting us to rest in His guidance and care. Lastly, trusting in God's person is about believing in His character—His love, wisdom, and faithfulness. The cross of Christ stands as the ultimate testament to God's trustworthy nature, demonstrating His sacrificial love and commitment to us.

In a world filled with uncertainty and stress, we are called to relax our lives on the everlasting arms of our Heavenly Father. Whether it's our careers, families, or personal struggles, we are invited to transfer our trust from ourselves to God, finding peace in His presence.

Devotional

I'm ready to provide the 5-day devotional based on the steps outlined. Here it is:

---

Day 1: Trust as a Foundation for Wisdom
Trusting in God is akin to resting or leaning on something sturdy. It involves placing our full weight on Him, confident in His strength and reliability. This trust is foundational to wisdom, aligning our lives with God's precepts, providence, and person. Trusting God means acknowledging His sovereignty and wisdom, even when our understanding is limited. It is an active choice to rely on His guidance and strength, much like leaning against a solid wall or resting on a cane. This trust is not passive but requires a conscious decision to align our lives with God's will, leading to a life of peace and rest. [05:32]

"Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock." (Isaiah 26:4, ESV)

Reflection: What is one area of your life where you struggle to trust God fully? How can you begin to lean on Him more in this area today?

Day 2: Obedience as an Act of Trust
Obedience to God's precepts is an act of trust, acknowledging that His directives are for our ultimate good. Even when His commands challenge our understanding or desires, trusting in His wisdom leads to a straight path. Obedience is not merely about following rules but is a demonstration of our trust in God's character and His plans for us. It requires humility and a willingness to submit our desires to His greater wisdom, believing that His ways are higher than ours. This act of trust transforms our lives, guiding us on a path that aligns with His purpose and brings us closer to His heart. [11:02]

"And Samuel said, 'Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to listen than the fat of rams.'" (1 Samuel 15:22, ESV)

Reflection: Is there a specific command of God that you find difficult to obey? What steps can you take to trust and follow His guidance in this area?

Day 3: Providence Over Personal Choices
While our choices matter, God's providence is greater, guiding and directing our lives. Trusting in His sovereign control allows us to rest in His guidance and care, even when life is uncertain. This understanding of providence does not negate our responsibility to make wise decisions but reassures us that God's overarching plan prevails. It invites us to surrender our anxieties and uncertainties to Him, knowing that He is working all things for our good. By trusting in His providence, we find peace in the midst of life's chaos, confident that He holds our future in His hands. [15:35]

"The heart of man plans his way, but the Lord establishes his steps." (Proverbs 16:9, ESV)

Reflection: Reflect on a recent decision you made. How can you trust God's providence in the outcome, regardless of the result?

Day 4: Trusting in God's Character
Trusting in God's person involves believing in His character—His love, wisdom, and faithfulness. The cross of Christ is the ultimate testament to God's trustworthy nature, demonstrating His sacrificial love and commitment to us. This trust is not based on our circumstances but on the unchanging nature of God. By focusing on His character, we are reminded of His promises and His faithfulness throughout history. This trust anchors us in times of doubt and fear, providing a firm foundation on which to build our lives. [25:16]

"Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations." (Deuteronomy 7:9, ESV)

Reflection: How does reflecting on God's character help you trust Him more deeply? What aspect of His character do you need to focus on today?

Day 5: Transferring Trust from Self to God
In a world filled with stress and anxiety, we are called to transfer our trust from ourselves to God. By resting our lives in His presence, we find peace and assurance in His everlasting arms. This transfer of trust requires us to let go of our need for control and to embrace the security found in God's love and sovereignty. It is an invitation to experience the peace that surpasses understanding, as we place our burdens and fears at His feet. In doing so, we discover the freedom and joy that come from living a life fully surrendered to Him. [28:01]

"Cast your burden on the Lord, and he will sustain you; he will never permit the righteous to be moved." (Psalm 55:22, ESV)

Reflection: What is one burden you are carrying that you need to transfer to God? How can you practically do this today?

Quotes

Trust in the Lord means that you relax your life on the Lord. It means that you lean on the Lord. It means that you rest on the Lord. And when you think about leaning on something, like if you're tired, you might lean against a wall, and you might rest a little bit. You're relaxed when you're leaning on something. [00:05:32]

And this is the Proverbs way of talking about trust. Trust in the Lord. Lean on the Lord. Relax on the Lord. Rest your whole heart on the Lord. It's a beautiful image, isn't it? In fact, Martin Luther, this is the way he talked about trust. He's an old church father, pastor, and he said trust in God is confidence in God. [00:06:16]

And the Proverbs is saying, trust the Lord, rely on the Lord, depend upon the Lord's precepts. He knows what's best for your life. He created you. His law, it's like the instruction manuals for the human. He knows what's best. Trust in the Lord's precepts, my son, says the book of Proverbs. [00:11:12]

Proverbs says you trust the Lord and he will make your path straight. It may not seem like it in the moment, but I am telling you, trust in the Lord. Lord, follow his directives even when they don't make sense, really. Because he knows what's best. Rely on his precepts. Trust in his directives. Follow his law. [00:12:42]

Providence is like God's invisible hand, guiding, directing behind the scenes, working all things together for his good, for your good and his glory. And the book of Proverbs says it is really smart and it's really a good thing to rest or relax in the providence of God. [00:14:21]

Your choices matter. And they have very real consequences, says the Proverbs. If you use angry words, you're going to hurt people. If you drive too fast, you're going to get a ticket. I learned that a couple weeks ago. If you cheat on your taxes, you might get caught. If you're lazy, probably you're not going to get promoted. [00:14:47]

However, the book of Proverbs says that God's providence is bigger than your choices. As important as your choices are, God is behind the scenes and he's bigger than the choices you make. So let me give you some Proverbs. One of them says this, the heart of a man plans his way. You better plan your way. Plan. [00:15:35]

And ultimately, we must give our kids into the hands of God's providence. Do you remember the story in Exodus of Moses' mom? And Moses was born under a death sentence and she's trying to keep him safe and keep him quiet. She's trying to hide him. She does all that she can do. [00:17:22]

And she trusts the baby in his hands. Do you trust your babies into the hands of God's providence? Sure, make all those decisions. Feed them good food. Organic food, please, come on. But God's in control. He's in control. He's in control. [00:18:12]

And yet, ultimately, we say, Lord, into your hands I give my life. Trust in the Lord with all of your heart. And even when you don't understand, even when it doesn't make sense, trust his good providence. Lean on his precepts. Lean on his providence. The final thing I want you to see is that we must learn how to lean on his person. [00:21:58]

We trust people that are trustworthy and this is what the Proverbs says. It says that I'm asking you to trust in the Lord with all of your heart because His character, His person is trustworthy. You can trust Him. You can put your life on Him. [00:23:48]

In the bloody brow and the pierced hands of Jesus, we see evidence that God is trustworthy, that he loves us, that he cares about us, that he is our rock. And so the book of Proverbs says, trust in the Lord with all of your heart. Lean on him. Relax on him. [00:26:50]
