#GodHoldsUs
“``God holds Jonah fast through the storm. God holds him fast in the sea. God holds him in the belly of a big fish. Sometimes we say no before we say yes. Sometimes we may, even like the prodigal, run to a far country before we come to our senses. Sometimes we may hide in the darkness before we come to the light. But in all these places, God holds us and God calls us, follow me. And in spite of all the roadblocks we put in the way, god calls us still.”

#VocationNotJob
“Every Christian has a calling. Our calling is to follow Christ. God certainly isn't calling us all to be ministers of the word and sacraments, teachers or elders or youth leaders or musicians or educators or pastors of local church. Oh, no. But we are called to be used the gifts that we have to serve Christ in our home, our church, our world. The very word vocation comes from the Latin vocatio, which means what? To summon, to call. Your vocation is not just a job. Your vocation is a calling.”

#LiveYourCalling
“Your vocation is not just a job. Your vocation is a calling. And what we do every day of our lives is in response to god's call to serve. And just as Jonah runs from his calling, we hear in Mark's gospel how the disciples take up their calling. Simple fishermen, farmers, shepherds, homemakers see the kingdom of God come to life in Jesus, and they follow him. They leave their familiar haunts and hiding places and set out on the road with Jesus.”

#YouCantRunFromGod
“But like Jonah, god's call was upon that boy's life. And even as he ran away, God had not abandoned him. And like the story of Jonah, there's more to Tim's Tyson story, but you'll have to come back next Sunday if you wanna hear what happened. I mean it. But today, I want us to know that try as we might, there is no way to flee from God's call. For God's hand is upon our lives. And sometimes, like the disciples, we are quick to say yes. And sometimes, like Jonah, we spend a whole lot of time running from God crying no. And sometimes, it takes a whole lifetime to come to our senses.”
