Sermon Summary

Sermon Clips

Jesus faces his Temptations at this point to win at least an initial victory over them if he doesn't they will meet him suddenly in the middle of his work and they may overwhelm him so there's a definite timeline here of Jesus is uh growing up living and up to the age of 30 and then his baptism immediately preceding this and then this testing and time in the wilderness for 40 days. [00:27:20]

after fasting 40 days and 40 nights he was hungry now I don't know about you and I think I need more discipline but missing one meal or a snack even I'm starting to think let move this off my earing um if I miss one meal or one snack you a bit grumblings going on we're talking 40 days and 40 nights and he was physically hungry. [00:28:34]

so the first thing that Satan does the tempter the evil one he came to him said and he peeled on his physical human basis if you are the Son of God tell these stones to become bread I mean how tempting would that be because he could have done it but in his humanity and in his fullness of sacrifice and Humanity he answered and he quotes scripture it is written man shall not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. [00:28:59]

the physical provision if you like of the Lord and we can translate that into other provision we're talking about physical hunger here but it might be our financial provision it might be our relationship provision it might be our um wanting friends and family it might be or whatever provision you're feeling you're lacking this scripture points us back to the very word of God that on every word of God we shall live that comes from the mouth of God. [00:29:56]

the enemy is subtle the enemy knows the strength of scripture he's using scripture again scripture but Jesus stands firm and says it is also written very calmly I think when we're in extreme um um passion situations it's always good to stay calm quote scripture let scripture do it the talking do not put the Lord your God to the test that's the second one the second one is about the very identity of God the very identity of Jesus. [00:31:08]

Jesus said to him I want to say this loudly really but I'm going to say it calmly away from me Satan for it is written Worship the Lord your God and serve him only more dramatic you could say away from me Satan for it is written Worship the Lord your God and serve him him only what happened the devil left him and the Angels Came to attend him so there's quite a lot to unpack there this morning but it's standing firm in the face of Temptation following the example of Jesus. [00:32:36]

Jesus is often compared to both Adam and Israel I'm putting this in a bigger context now Adam the first man was tempted in the garden right at the beginning of time when when man was made and he failed he brought sin into the world Genesis 3 Israel God's chosen people were tested in the W Wilderness for 40 years and repeatedly fell we've had quite a bit of that recently again and again Israel fail they end up woring Idols disobeying. [00:33:11]

Jesus chooses to rely on God's word rather than satisfy his own own immediate physical human hunger and in that he shows us that life is not about physical satisfaction but actually ultimately spiritual obedience repentance and salvation how often are we tempted to prioritize our physical needs just something to think about in Lent how much are we attending to our physical needs and how much are we attending to our um God's truth in our spiritual life. [00:34:22]

Jesus has shown us the way trust in the father but in this section the second section Satan tries quoting scripture he twists it and manipulates it to test Jesus Psalm 91 is a promise of God's protection but it does not mean that we should deliberately put ourselves in danger to force God's hand we're not in that sort of testing Satan is tempting Jesus to doubt to doubt God's care and provision to doubt our identity as sons and daughters in Christ. [00:36:49]

Jesus refused to take the shortcut to glory and he insists that worship belongs to God alone and Satan prows around he offers the same Temptation today he whispers go on compromise a little you'll get a bit of success bend the rules do it your way you can aieve your Dre dreams but Jesus is showing actually that True Glory comes through obedience to God not through shortcuts or compromises so Jesus's victory in the wilderness proves that he is the new Adam and the true Israel. [00:41:13]

where Adam failed in the garden Jesus triumphed in the desert Adam gave into temptation and brought sin into the world Jesus overcame Temptation and brought righteousness where Israel wandered and failed abysmally in the wilderness Jesus remained faithful Israel grumbled and tested God and worshiped Idols Jesus trusted obeyed and pointed worship back to God so the passage reminds us that we too face Temptations every day the encouragement this morning is in the strength of God's word. [00:41:31]

Jesus not only shows us the way he empowers Us in the power of the Holy Spirit to follow him through his Spirit we have strength to resist the devil and walk in obedience so let's fix our eyes on Jesus let's trust him let's know our identity as Sons and Daughters of God and let's follow him to do his will amen.
