Doing Your Part: Resisting Temptation and Standing Firm

Matthew 4 puts Jesus in the wilderness right after the Father calls Him the beloved Son and the Spirit leads Him forward. That progression matters because the devil does not only bother people who are doing nothing. The devil comes against what God is up to, trying to detour purpose before it can bear fruit. Jesus shows that faith is not proven until faith has been tempted.

The first temptation comes at a weak place. Jesus is hungry, and the devil tells Him to turn stones into bread. Jesus has the power to do it, but He refuses to satisfy Himself outside of the Father’s provision. The words “it is written” become His weapon, because man does not live by bread alone but by every word from God’s mouth. The Word keeps temptation from turning lack into selfishness.

The second temptation attacks identity. The devil says, “If you are the Son of God,” then even starts quoting Scripture to the Word made flesh. Jesus refuses to prove Himself, because a child of the King does not need people’s approval to know value. Blood has already paid the price. The devil can misuse Scripture, misconstrue Scripture, and put doubt in somebody’s mind, but Jesus answers with the Word rightly handled: “Do not put the Lord your God to the test.”

The third temptation offers kingdoms without a cross, promises without process, and a destination without a journey. The devil offers Jesus what already belongs to Him, provided that He bows down. Jesus says no, because every shortcut cuts somebody short. The crown cannot come apart from the cross, and standing in God’s will matters more than getting something quickly.

Jesus finally does His part at Calvary. The garden reveals that the cup was bitter and the cross was difficult, yet Jesus submits: “Not my will, let Your will be done.” The cross becomes the place where Christ does for sinners what sinners could never do for themselves. Because Jesus stood, died, and got up again, God’s people can stand against the devil, do their part in the body, and trust God to handle His part.
