Vulnerability is not weakness, fragility, or failure. Vulnerability is a human condition, just like sadness, frustration, hunger, and need. Jesus Himself entered the wilderness, fasted for forty days, and became hungry. Need does not make a person less capable. Need makes a person human.
Resilience does not grow from gritting teeth, putting a head down, and pushing through alone. Resilience grows in community. Moses pictures this in Exodus 17, when his arms grow heavy during the battle with Amalek. Aaron and Hur put a stone beneath him, stand on either side, and hold his hands up until sundown. Steady hands are not proof that Moses never got tired. Steady hands are proof that he had people in his corner.
Burnout often comes through good things, not just unwanted things. Love for children, marriage, work, friends, hobbies, and missional community can all become overwhelming when need stays hidden. The call to endurance in Scripture does not mean isolated striving. The body of Christ becomes part of how God keeps afflicted people from being crushed, perplexed people from despairing, and struck-down people from being destroyed.
Transparency makes that kind of resilience possible. Transparency requires courage to say what is really going on, grace when others do not respond perfectly, and trust that healthy relationships can carry the truth. Fear, worry, annoyance, and comparison do not stay small when they are hidden. Worry can become anxiety and fear. Annoyance can become bitterness, resentment, and pride. Comparison can become envy and a desperate need to fill empty spaces. The enemy loves secrecy because unchecked desires grow poisonous in the dark.
Jesus brings life and has what vulnerable people need. Transparency brings little worries, little resentments, and little fears into the light before they become something bigger. Healthy community does not always fix the problem or say exactly the right thing. Healthy community stays in the corner, listens, asks questions, and helps carry a person back to Jesus.
Shared grief becomes another marker of that kind of love. Jesus weeps with Mary at Lazarus’s tomb, even though He knows resurrection is coming. Jesus does not rush past her tears with the answer He is about to give. His tears reveal love: “See how he loved him.” Grief does not need perfect words or perfect solutions. Grief needs someone willing to sit in it, pray through it, and refuse to leave.
Community can be personal, small, and large. Personal relationships hold full transparency, small groups move beyond surface-level answers, and large communities provide shared life and belonging. Each layer helps hold up weary hands.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Need is part of being human Vulnerability does not cancel strength or maturity. Jesus experienced hunger, grief, weariness, and the need for close relationships. Need becomes dangerous only when shame convinces a person to hide it from Christ and from trustworthy community. [49:53]
- 2. Resilience requires hands held up Moses could not keep his hands raised by determination alone. Aaron and Hur did not replace Moses’s calling, but they made faithfulness possible when his strength ran out. Community often looks less like rescue and more like steady presence beside a weary person. [52:19]
- 3. Hidden struggles grow in darkness Worry, annoyance, and comparison can begin small, but secrecy gives them room to take root. Transparency interrupts the cycle before fear becomes avoidance or irritation becomes resentment. Christ’s life pushes back against the enemy’s work of stealing, killing, and destroying. [60:30]
- 4. Grief needs presence before answers Jesus weeps at Lazarus’s tomb even while knowing that resurrection is moments away. Love does not rush suffering along simply because hope is true. Shared grief carries another person’s pain into prayer and says, through faithful presence, “You are not alone here.”
