Preach Repentance: Mercy for Wheat and Weeds

God’s will is not meant to be a puzzle that makes everybody think too hard. God’s will is to save. The name of Jesus means “God saves,” and John 3:16 says that God sent his only begotten Son so that the world might not perish but have eternal life. God wants to save every person, and if that gets missed, then the words of Jesus and the parables of Jesus stop making sense.

Jesus explains the parable of the wheat and the weeds, and the hard question sits right there in the field: why does God allow both to grow together? The servants want the weeds ripped out right away, and that instinct feels honest because evil looks dangerous and contaminating. The fear of contamination can make a soul act like a germaphobe with God, wanting every evil thing and every evil person cut off immediately. But God sowed the seed, and God has the power to raise wheat in the middle of weeds. God’s power is not so weak that weeds have to be treated as stronger than grace.

God’s mercy is greater than the longest list brought to confession. A person can think the sins are too much, the weeds are too many, the plot is too tangled, but God’s mercy is “that much greater.” God lets wheat and weeds grow together as a sign of mercy and justice. God’s justice will shine at the end of the age, when those who consistently choose against the word of God are cast away, and those who keep trying, with effort and grace, will rejoice.

The mission, then, is not to sit back and do nothing. The gospel of repentance must be preached so that all may be saved. The servants of God are not called to rip everything out from a lofty tower, but to become hands, feet, and voice in the world. Repentance is preached by those who have been saved too, not by those pretending to be untouched wheat.

Healing and deliverance do not exist merely to make life comfortable. God does not rip out; God untangles, so freedom can lead a person to the knowledge of the truth and to salvation. The witness matters because “modern man listens to witnesses,” and teachers are heard when they themselves are witnesses. God’s people are called to go out into the weeds, not afraid of the world, leaving judgment and justice to God, and carrying the mercy that has no end.
