God has made this church a praying church, a place that goes into the community saying, “You got a problem. God’s got power.” Christ has given believers more than a religious routine. Christ has called them sons and daughters, conquerors who refuse to be turned around by disease, addiction, marriage trouble, or any other circumstance in a fallen world.
Repentance and belief belong together in Mark 1:15. Repentance is the on ramp, but belief is the road, and Jesus is the way. Repentance changes the mind and turns a person from sin, while belief puts that person in motion toward Christ. Abraham went, Noah built, the disciples left their nets, and Pentecost believers were baptized. Genuine faith moves.
Nicodemus had facts right about Jesus. Nicodemus knew Jesus was a teacher from God, recognized real miracles, knew Scripture, lived a disciplined life, and held religious credentials. Jesus moved him from what he knew to what he needed: “You must be born again.” Religion had given Nicodemus knowledge and morality, but only the Spirit could give him life.
The new birth is not self-help, behavior modification, or an old life cleaned up. Regeneration is God making a dead sinner alive. Reformation says, “I’m going to do better,” but regeneration says, “God has made me alive.” The Holy Spirit does what religious effort cannot do, bringing a person out of the flesh, out of darkness, and into real life with Christ.
The bronze serpent in Numbers 21 shows what belief looks like. Sin is poison already working inside humanity, and no person can remove it, reverse it, or cure himself. God provided the remedy, and dying Israelites looked at what God lifted up and lived. Christ was lifted up on the cross, and faith looks away from self and rests in what God has provided.
The cross tells two truths at once: sin is worse than people want to admit, and God’s love is greater than they dare believe. God loved first, God gave first, and salvation begins with what God has done. Faith is not the price paid for salvation. Faith is the empty hand receiving God’s gift.
The Holy Spirit keeps removing sin as believers walk toward Jesus. Sanctification is not perfection overnight. Believers fall, repent, get up, and keep moving toward the light. Nicodemus himself appears to move from nighttime questions, to speaking up for Jesus, to publicly caring for Jesus’ body after the crucifixion.
Christ still asks more than whether someone respects Him, knows John 3:16, attends church, or owns a Bible. Christ asks whether that person has trusted Him with life. The church must leave the building, walk with struggling people, give them time, and show them how to follow Jesus.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Repentance gets on, belief keeps moving Repentance is not the finish line. Repentance turns a person from sin, but belief starts the walk of following Jesus. A faith that never moves has stopped on the on ramp instead of taking the road Christ calls believers to walk. [32:30]
- 2. Correct facts cannot replace new birth Nicodemus respected Jesus, knew Scripture, and recognized God at work, yet Jesus told him he still needed to be born again. Religious knowledge can fill a head while leaving a life untouched. The Spirit must give life where religion only provides information. [49:28]
- 3. Faith looks away from self The Israelites could not remove the poison from their bodies, and sinners cannot remove the poison of sin from their own lives. God provided the bronze serpent then, and God provided Christ lifted up on the cross now. Faith receives what God has done rather than trusting self-improvement. [66:47]
- 4. The Spirit removes sin while walking Sanctification happens as believers keep taking steps toward Jesus. Failure does not give permission to turn back, hide, or quit. The Holy Spirit exposes sin, empowers repentance, and teaches believers to walk in the light one step at a time. [78:14]
- 5. Discipleship gives struggling people time Mature believers carry a responsibility to walk beside people who are drowning in confusion, failure, and broken relationships. Bob and Joanne showed that discipleship is not a class certificate but life shared over time. Faith comes alive when somebody says, “Let’s just walk together for a little bit.”
