Repent, Be Baptized In Jesus' Name, Receive Holy Ghost

God’s presence interrupts the normal order because heaven is not bothered by what feels strange to the culture of this world. The Holy Ghost does what He wants to do, and a church service becomes church in the fullest sense when people step aside and let God move. The Bible gives an answer for every question that may come from such a moment, and Scripture provides clarity for the things God does.

The crippled man lowered through the roof shows that a condition may describe someone coming to Jesus, but it does not get to name someone leaving Jesus. His sick bed was real, his need was real, and his friends had to tear through a roof to get him into the room. But his identity was not meant to remain tied to the bed that carried him in. The same God who meets people in their mess gives them a new name and a new way to walk out.

The devil’s lies hide in obscurity. Unclear, abstract religion leaves room for confusion, but the Bible brings clarity about how an old identity is put down and a new identity is received. Jesus tells Nicodemus that nobody sees or enters the kingdom without being born again, born of water and of Spirit. The new birth is not merely a feeling in the room. The new birth gives a person a life hidden in Christ, where identity is no longer carried by the power of personal failure.

Matthew 28:19 points to one name, not three names. The name belonging to the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost is Jesus Christ. Acts 4:12 declares that no other name under heaven has been given by which people must be saved, and Acts records baptism in the name of Jesus Christ. Paul’s encounter with disciples in Acts 19 shows that sincerity and prior religious experience did not remove the need to be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.

Acts 2 gives the gospel plainly: repent, be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and receive the gift of the Holy Ghost. The Holy Ghost’s outpouring, including speaking with other tongues, confirms that God is still giving His Spirit. Jesus offers more than a touch that fades after a service. Jesus gives a new name, a new identity, and a way to leave different than someone came.
