Holy ground moments matter. Mount Sinai, the burning bush, the Mount of Transfiguration, a conference, a retreat, a night of worship, or a quiet place in the woods can all become moments where God feels near and holy. But Jesus never intended spiritual experiences to become permanent destinations. Those moments are powerful, and they are wanted, but they are meant to prepare people, not park them.

The table is more than a place where faith pauses. The table is where mission begins. Communion is not meant to help believers think about Jesus for thirty minutes on Sunday and then leave unchanged. Jesus intends his table to change all the other tables, the tables in homes, workplaces, neighborhoods, and ordinary life.

Luke 24 gives that truth a face on the road to Emmaus. The followers of Jesus leave Jerusalem heavy, slow, confused, and heartbroken. A week earlier, the people had shouted Hosanna, but now hope seems dead and buried. Jesus comes near, walks with them, asks questions, opens the Scriptures, and meets them right where they are, even though their eyes are kept from recognizing him.

Jesus reveals himself at the table. He takes bread, blesses it, breaks it, and gives it to them. Suddenly their eyes are opened, and they recognize him. Then Jesus disappears, not because he is finished with them, but because he is preparing them to become witnesses. His physical presence is not meant to be something they cling to. His living reality is meant to send them.

Communion changes what people notice. Before the table, interruptions look like problems, difficult people look like burdens, and inconvenience feels like frustration. After the table, opportunities appear, difficult people become people Jesus died for, and inconvenience may turn out to be mission. Communion is not only about seeing Jesus. Communion teaches people to see others the way Jesus sees them.

The Emmaus disciples do not stay and finish dinner. They do not wait until morning. They get up immediately and go seven miles back to Jerusalem, probably not dragging their feet this time, because people need to know that Jesus is alive. Real encounters always produce movement.

The bread was never meant to stay in the hands. The cup was never meant to end in a private moment. The table invites, changes, fills, renews, and sends. Communion was never meant to be done with “amen.” Communion was meant to be done with “go.”
