Jesus calls the church past crowds and into disciple making. Matthew 28 makes the command clear: the big thing is not just to go, but to “make disciples.” The disciples themselves worshiped Jesus while some still doubted, which means doubt does not disqualify somebody from following Christ. Jesus starts discipleship the moment a person comes to him by grace through faith, and every follower, from the brand-new believer to the OG Christian, has a next step of obedience.

Discipleship does not stop after salvation, baptism, years in church, serving on a team, or knowing all the songs. The question stays the same: “What is my next step of obedience?” Obedience may not always feel fun or comfortable, but stopping those steps means somebody has stopped following Jesus. Jesus calls people to leave their nets, leave the boat, and follow him, because following always means movement.

John 13 gives the first plain characteristic of a disciple: a disciple loves all people by serving. Jesus knew the cross was coming, yet he did not spend his final hours checking off a bucket list. Jesus stayed locked into the Father’s mission and showed the full extent of his love through a towel, a basin, and dirty feet. The most powerful person in the room took the lowest job in the room because nobody else would do it.

Jesus washes feet that carried dirt, scum, and all the mess of the road, including the feet of disciples who would soon abandon him. Jesus does not merely say, “I love you.” Jesus serves people all the way to the cross. God’s love gives his sons and daughters the capacity to love people the same way, not as an intention but as an action.

The devil pushes people to doubt the Word of God, the work of God, and the worth of God. Judas stayed around Jesus, heard Jesus, and did religious things, but Judas never truly knew Jesus. Jesus, however, calls Peter clean, not because Peter performed perfectly, but because Christ’s coming sacrifice would make him completely clean. The cross and resurrection mean that no sin can outrun the grace of God, and communion keeps that gift front and center.
