Remembering God: Overcoming Spiritual Forgetfulness

Summary

In today's gathering, we explored the theme of forgetfulness, particularly how it relates to our relationship with God. We began by acknowledging our human tendency to forget, whether it's simple daily tasks or significant spiritual truths. This forgetfulness can extend to our spiritual lives, where we may inadvertently neglect God's instructions, presence, and the testimonies of His work in our lives. We examined several biblical examples, starting with Adam and Eve, who forgot God's command and succumbed to temptation. Similarly, the Israelites often forgot God's presence and provision, leading to complaints and doubts during their desert wanderings.

We also discussed the sobering reality of a generation that arose after Joshua's time, which did not know the Lord or His works. This serves as a warning for us today to ensure that we are actively sharing our faith and the stories of God's faithfulness with the next generation. In the New Testament, we looked at Peter's denial of Jesus, a poignant reminder that even those closest to Christ can falter when fear and pressure mount.

The message today is a call to remember and to actively engage with God in our daily lives. We are encouraged to reflect on whether we have forgotten God in any area of our lives, whether through neglecting His commandments, failing to pray, or not sharing His goodness with others. We are reminded that God desires a deep, personal relationship with each of us, and that requires intentionality on our part to remember His words, His works, and His presence.

Key Takeaways:

1. The Danger of Forgetfulness: Forgetting God's instructions, as Adam and Eve did, can lead us away from His will. We must be vigilant in remembering and applying His commandments in our lives, seeking forgiveness when we falter. [30:22]

2. God's Presence in the Desert: Like the Israelites, we may find ourselves in spiritual deserts, feeling distant from God. Yet, He promises never to leave us. We must hold onto this truth and seek His presence, even when He feels far away. [32:57]

3. Passing the Torch: The generation after Joshua forgot the Lord because they were not told of His works. We must actively share our testimonies and God's faithfulness with others to prevent spiritual amnesia in future generations. [34:21]

4. Peter's Denial and Our Vulnerability: Peter's denial of Jesus shows that even the strongest believers can falter under pressure. We must strengthen our relationship with God to withstand trials and remain faithful. [45:14]

5. Intentional Remembrance: We are called to remember God's might, His healing power, and His forgiveness. This remembrance should lead us to live out His commandments, engage in prayer, and share His love with others. [48:07]

Day 1: The Peril of Spiritual Amnesia
Forgetting God's instructions, as seen in the story of Adam and Eve, can lead us away from His will and into temptation. This forgetfulness is not just about neglecting commandments but also about losing sight of God's presence and His work in our lives. We are reminded of the importance of vigilance in remembering and applying His teachings, seeking forgiveness when we falter. This vigilance is crucial in maintaining a close relationship with God and ensuring that we do not stray from His path. [30:22]

Deuteronomy 4:9 (ESV): "Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your children and your children's children."

Reflection: Identify one commandment or teaching of God that you have neglected. How can you actively incorporate it into your daily life starting today?

Day 2: Finding God in the Wilderness
The Israelites' journey through the desert serves as a powerful reminder that even in our spiritual deserts, God is present. Despite feeling distant from Him, we are assured of His promise never to leave us. This truth calls us to hold onto our faith and seek His presence, especially when He seems far away. By doing so, we can find strength and comfort in His unwavering presence, even in the most challenging times. [32:57]

Isaiah 41:10 (ESV): "Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand."

Reflection: Think of a time when you felt spiritually dry or distant from God. What steps can you take today to seek His presence and reassurance in your life?

Day 3: Ensuring a Legacy of Faith
The generation after Joshua forgot the Lord because they were not told of His works. This serves as a cautionary tale for us to actively share our testimonies and God's faithfulness with others. By doing so, we can prevent spiritual amnesia in future generations and ensure that the legacy of faith continues. It is our responsibility to pass on the stories of God's goodness and His mighty works to those who come after us. [34:21]

Judges 2:10 (ESV): "And all that generation also were gathered to their fathers. And there arose another generation after them who did not know the Lord or the work that he had done for Israel."

Reflection: Who in your life can you share a testimony of God's faithfulness with today? How can you make sharing your faith a regular practice?

Day 4: Strengthening Our Faith Under Pressure
Peter's denial of Jesus highlights the vulnerability of even the strongest believers when faced with fear and pressure. This serves as a reminder of the importance of strengthening our relationship with God to withstand trials and remain faithful. By deepening our connection with Him, we can find the courage and resilience needed to stand firm in our faith, even in the face of adversity. [45:14]

1 Corinthians 10:12-13 (ESV): "Therefore let anyone who thinks that he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it."

Reflection: Reflect on a recent challenge where your faith was tested. What practical steps can you take to strengthen your relationship with God to better withstand future trials?

Day 5: Cultivating Intentional Remembrance
We are called to remember God's might, His healing power, and His forgiveness. This intentional remembrance should lead us to live out His commandments, engage in prayer, and share His love with others. By actively recalling His works and presence, we can cultivate a deeper, more personal relationship with Him and ensure that His influence permeates every aspect of our lives. [48:07]

Psalm 77:11-12 (ESV): "I will remember the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will remember your wonders of old. I will ponder all your work, and meditate on your mighty deeds."

Reflection: What is one specific way you can intentionally remember and celebrate God's work in your life today? How can this practice become a regular part of your spiritual routine?

We are living in a generation where so many people are looking at if you've never heard this before I might be spitting out new words to You New Age which is like a form of godliness but so much of it is demonic but because they don't know the truth of God's word they look at those things believe those things and say well that's like what you guys are listening to over here at church chur so I must be right and if no one tells them otherwise they're going to be continuously living in that darkness and not be free from it Witchcraft and all these other things that people get into we we ignore those things but if we don't bring awareness to the fact that there is an evil at work but yet there is a God who is stronger than any kind of Darkness then we're not helping anybody. [00:40:00]

In Judges chapter 2 again with the Israelites I'm telling you we're not too different from them Judges chapter 2 in verse 10 now this is the part where I fear that we are in more so than ever before Judges chapter 2 verse 10 and also that generation were gathered unto their fathers and there arose another generation after them which knew not the Lord nor yet The Works which he had done for Israel. [00:33:41]

Peter walked with Jesus and never in his wildest dreams would imagine that he would deny Christ but when things got hard and Jesus was not near he denied ever knowing him and I know you've heard this story before but I want you to try to put it in today's lifetime let's imagine that you're much like the Israel lights and you're spiritually in a desert type of situation where you don't feel as close with God and when you pray you feel like God's not really listening to you things just don't seem to be going right and so Jesus feels far away and now you're challenged by your faith whether literal persecution or stuff just gets really hard in life it is very easy if you're not spiritually awakened to realize to get captured by the lies of the enemy and pull further and further away from God it's very easy and it's easy to be like no I never went to that church I don't go to that church or no no they I don't talk to that I don't know them be very easy to do that why to try to fit in with the world to try to protect your reputation protect yourself it's very easy to do those types of things now I know most of you probably wouldn't be like that but it is easy if you let your guard down and if you don't have a strong relationship with the Lord to forget God to deny him and to put yourself in a place where you are just like Peter. [00:47:21]

I want you to honestly reflect on your personal life today and the days ahead and I'm going to ask you this have you forgotten God have you forgotten his might his healing power that he is greater than any of your problems have you forgotten that God forgives have you forgotten that he judges that he is righteous and that he is Holy have you forgotten any kind of personal instructions that he may have given you perhaps a calling or an assignment that he's given you maybe you've been feeling an Ur to reach out to somebody to just literally just check up on them and that's all God asked you to do have you forgotten to do that. [00:48:07]

We need to make sure that we do not become that same type of generation of Israelites who forgot to tell the next generation of God's goodness and his Mercy his power his might and all of the awesome things that he is because if we don't tell them not only will they not know that they will be weak they will be victims of Satan and his tactics and they won't know how to get out because soon enough you'll be gone and there'll be no one there to tell them them that is a dangerous place to be in and that if nothing else should spark your heart this morning to make sure that you tell others of God's goodness and his Mercy tell them about his word the things that he's done maybe not even just for yourself maybe you heard a testimony of somebody else and how good God was for them we're talking about your your car situation that is a testimony God's hand upon you that the car didn't blow up right and then you were stuck in who knows where out west right that God's hand was upon you so whenever you have car trouble that you know God did it for them and he can do it for me that is this type of mentality that we need to have that's why we tell each other of the good things that God does. [00:34:21]
