Reflecting God's Character Through the Ten Commandments
Summary
The Ten Commandments are not merely a set of rules but a profound reflection of God's glorious character. They serve as a mirror, showing us who God is and what He desires for His people. When we consider Romans 3:23, which states that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, it becomes clear that the commandments are a direct reflection of that glory. As God's redeemed people, we are called to live lives that mirror His character. Each commandment is a call to reflect an aspect of God's nature: His faithfulness, trustworthiness, truth, contentment, and sovereignty.
For instance, we are called not to commit adultery because God is faithful, and He desires that we reflect His faithfulness. We should not steal because God is trustworthy, and as His children, we are to embody that trustworthiness. Similarly, we are not to lie because God's word is truth, and we are to be true to our word. The commandments guide us in living a life that reflects God's character, which is ultimately a life of love.
Jesus summarized the commandments by teaching that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves. The first four commandments show us how to love God, while the last six teach us how to love our neighbors. This love is not abstract but practical, involving honoring our parents, valuing life, being faithful, trustworthy, truthful, and content.
In a world that often redefines good and evil based on self-interest, the commandments provide a clear standard rooted in God's unchanging character. They are a treasure, as David expressed in the Psalms, because they reflect the God we love and serve. By pursuing a life that aligns with these commandments, we reflect God's glory and love to the world.

Day 1: Reflecting God's Character
The Ten Commandments are not just a list of rules but a profound reflection of God's character. They call us to live lives that mirror His faithfulness, trustworthiness, and truth. As God's redeemed people, we are to embody these attributes in our daily lives. Each commandment reveals an aspect of God's nature, such as His faithfulness, which we are to reflect by being faithful in our relationships and commitments. By not stealing, we embody God's trustworthiness, and by speaking truthfully, we reflect His truth. The commandments guide us in living a life that reflects God's character, which is ultimately a life of love. [01:29]
"For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face." (Psalm 11:7, ESV)
Reflection: In what specific ways can you reflect God's faithfulness and truth in your interactions with others today?
Day 2: Love as the Fulfillment of the Law
Jesus summarized the commandments by teaching that the greatest commandment is to love God with all our heart, soul, and mind, and the second is to love our neighbor as ourselves. This love is not abstract but practical, involving honoring our parents, valuing life, being faithful, trustworthy, truthful, and content. True love is rooted in God's character and expressed through our actions. By living out the commandments, we demonstrate a love that is both vertical, towards God, and horizontal, towards others. This dual love fulfills the law and reflects God's glory to the world. [06:38]
"And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it." (2 John 1:6, ESV)
Reflection: How can you practically show love to someone in your life today, in a way that reflects God's love and truth?
Day 3: A Clear Standard in a Shifting World
In a culture that often redefines good and evil based on self-interest, the commandments provide a clear standard rooted in God's unchanging nature. They guide us in living a life that reflects His glory and love, offering a counter-narrative to the world's shifting values. By adhering to these commandments, we align ourselves with God's eternal truth and resist the temptation to conform to the world's ever-changing definitions of right and wrong. The commandments are a treasure because they reflect the God we love and serve. [04:43]
"Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect." (Romans 12:2, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area where you feel pressured to conform to the world's standards, and how can you instead align with God's unchanging truth today?
Day 4: Love Begins at Home
The commandments teach us that love begins at home, with the people God has placed in our lives. By honoring our parents and valuing life, we demonstrate the love and respect that God calls us to embody. This foundational love extends outward, influencing how we interact with others in our community and beyond. The commandments remind us that our closest relationships are the training ground for living out God's love and truth. By nurturing these relationships, we reflect God's character and fulfill our calling as His people. [08:20]
"Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you." (Exodus 20:12, ESV)
Reflection: How can you show honor and love to a family member today, in a way that reflects God's love and respect?
Day 5: Treasuring God's Commandments
The commandments are a treasure because they reflect the God we love and serve. By pursuing a life that aligns with these commandments, we reflect God's glory and love to the world, fulfilling our calling as His people. They are not burdensome rules but a guide to living a life that is pleasing to God and beneficial to others. As we embrace these commandments, we find joy and purpose in living according to God's design, and we become a light to those around us, pointing them to the God who is love. [09:28]
"Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who greatly delights in his commandments!" (Psalm 112:1, ESV)
Reflection: What is one commandment you can focus on today to better align your life with God's will and reflect His love to those around you?
Quotes
The Ten Commandments are not simply an arbitrary list of rules; they are a direct reflection of the glorious character of our wonderful God. In the New Testament, some of you will know this verse, Romans chapter 3 and verse 23: all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God. [00:00:17]
What God is saying to His own redeemed people is, "Look, I've made you my own. You bear my name in the world, and therefore what I'm calling you to as my redeemed people is that you will live a life that is a reflection of what I'm like, and a reflection of what I'm like is right here for you in these Ten Commandments." [00:01:15]
Why should you not commit adultery? Answer: because your God is faithful, and He wants to see a reflection of His faithfulness in you. He says to you, "I will never leave you, and I will never forsake you." Now you are His child; you are to reflect His faithfulness. [00:01:39]
Why should you not steal? Well, because God can be trusted, and because you belong to Him as His redeemed son or His redeemed daughter, He wants you to be trustworthy as He is worthy of all your trust. Why should you not lie? Well, because God's word is truth. [00:02:01]
God is content; He is at peace in Himself because He is working all things out in accordance with His sovereign will. And if you belong to Him and therefore you represent Him in the world, well, God says, "Let there be a peace and a contentment about you." [00:02:37]
The Bible tells us that God is good and that our good lies in reflecting who He is. So what happens when a culture turns away from God is that there's then a desperate scramble to define what good actually is, and it gets defined by various groups according to self-interest. [00:04:28]
David says in the Psalms, "Oh, how I love your law." Now, why would David say that he loves the law of God? Answer: he loves God, and the law of God is a reflection of the character of God. And because he loves God, he loves the reflection that is there in the commandments. [00:05:07]
The Ten Commandments really spell out for us what a life of love really looks like, what a life that is patterned after the character of God actually looks like. Remember, on one occasion, Jesus was asked by someone who was actually trying to trip Him up with a trick question. [00:05:36]
Jesus was asked, "Which is the great commandment in the law?" Pick one that's the most important. And instead of picking one, what Jesus did was He wrapped all ten together, and He said this: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind." [00:06:23]
The first four commandments tell us what loving God looks like. It's that you have no other gods before the Lord. It's that you don't make an image. In other words, you love Him as He is, not as you would like or imagine Him to be. It means that you hallow His name. [00:07:18]
The last six commandments tell us what it looks like to love your neighbor as yourself. And when God speaks to us and lays it out, He's saying to us very clearly with the fifth commandment, "You know what? If you're going to talk about love, it better begin at home." [00:08:06]
The Ten Commandments are a mirror that reflects the glory of God. God is love, and He calls us as His redeemed people to a life that reflects who He is, and what that life looks like is spelled out in the Ten Commandments. That's why David says, "Oh, how I love your law." [00:09:15]
