God brings His people through the fire not to destroy, but to refine, purify, and prepare them for a closer relationship with Him. Just as silver and gold are refined to remove impurities, God uses the refining fire to burn away what does not belong in our lives, making us vessels of honor, ready to carry His glory to a world in need. The process may be uncomfortable, but it is necessary for us to become strong, durable, and able to fulfill our purpose in Christ. [25:35]
Zechariah 13:9
"And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, ‘They are my people’; and they will say, ‘The Lord is my God.’" (ESV)
Reflection: What area of your life is God refining right now, and how can you choose to trust His process instead of resisting it today?
Even when we walk through the fire, God never abandons us; He is present, watching over us, and ensuring we are not destroyed but strengthened. Just as Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego were not alone in the fiery furnace, we too are accompanied by the Lord in our trials, and He uses these moments to shape us without letting us be consumed. The assurance of His presence gives us courage to endure and faith to keep moving forward, knowing we are never alone in our refining seasons. [42:25]
Isaiah 43:2
"When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you." (ESV)
Reflection: When you face trials or “the fire,” how can you remind yourself that God is with you, and what practical step can you take today to lean on His presence?
The refining fire removes impurities and produces holiness, so that when God looks at us, He sees His own reflection. True sanctification is not just about surviving the fire, but about being transformed so that our lives reflect the image of Christ to the world. As the Holy Spirit burns away what is not of God, we become living testimonies of His grace, and others can see the difference in how we live, act, and love. [53:30]
Psalm 66:10
"For you, O God, have tested us; you have tried us as silver is tried." (ESV)
Reflection: In what ways do your actions and attitudes reflect Christ to those around you, and what is one area you sense God wants to purify further?
Maturity in Christ comes as we yield to the refining fire, allowing God to burn away what cannot stay and to shape us into vessels that can withstand pressure and overflow with His Spirit. Resisting the process leads to spiritual immaturity, but surrendering to God’s work in us produces patience, strength, and the ability to carry His glory to others. Letting go of what God removes, even when it’s difficult, is essential for becoming complete and lacking nothing in Him. [58:09]
James 1:2-4
"Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." (ESV)
Reflection: What is one thing God is asking you to let go of so that you can grow in spiritual maturity, and how will you surrender it to Him today?
The fire of God not only purifies but also empowers, filling us with boldness, unity, and power to fulfill His purpose. On the day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit fell like fire, burning out fear and self-will, and filling the disciples with the courage and strength to proclaim the gospel. When we allow the Holy Spirit to refine and fill us, we become vessels through which God’s power and love flow to others, making a real difference in our families, churches, and communities. [01:05:58]
Acts 2:1-4
"When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance." (ESV)
Reflection: Where do you need boldness, unity, or power in your life right now, and how can you invite the Holy Spirit to fill and empower you today?
Today, we gathered on Pentecost Sunday to celebrate the victory we have in Jesus and to reflect on the meaning and necessity of being refined by God’s fire. The victory Christ won on the cross is not just a one-time event, but an ongoing reality that empowers us to stand firm against every attack of the enemy. Yet, this victory is not without process; God’s refining fire is essential for us to become vessels worthy of carrying His glory to a world in desperate need.
The refining fire is not punishment, but preparation. Just as silver and gold are purified in the fire, so too are we purified by God to remove what does not belong, so that what is precious remains. The process is often uncomfortable and resisted, but it is necessary for our spiritual maturity. Like clay vessels, we may look complete on the outside, but without the fire, we remain fragile and unable to fulfill our purpose. The kiln of God’s refining love hardens and strengthens us, setting our shape so we can withstand the pressures of life and ministry.
This process is not about God trying to break us, but about Him preparing us to carry His presence. The fire removes the worldliness and self-centeredness that hinder us, making us empty and ready to be filled with the Holy Spirit. True impact is not made from the pulpit alone, but through lives that reflect Christ in everyday actions. The refiner never leaves the vessel unattended; God is with us in the fire, just as He was with Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego. He knows when we are ready, and He walks with us through every trial.
Sanctification is the result of this refining. As impurities are burned away, holiness is produced, and we begin to reflect the image of Christ. The world needs to see God’s reflection in us, not just hear our words. When the fire of Pentecost fell, it brought boldness, unity, and power—not just emotional experiences, but real transformation. The fire purifies and then empowers, so that we can be filled and overflow with the Holy Spirit, carrying God’s glory to others.
Our response must be to yield, not resist. We must let God burn away what cannot stay, trusting that He removes only what stands in the way of our calling. Even when the process is painful and confusing, God is working for our good, preparing us to be vessels of honor. Let us not resist the flame, but allow it to do its work, so that we may be mature, empowered, and ready to fulfill God’s purpose for our lives.
Zechariah 13:9 — "And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on my name, and I will hear them: I will say, It is my people: and they shall say, The Lord is my God."
- Malachi 3:2-3
"But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fullers' soap: And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness."
- Acts 2:1-4
"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance."
You see, the purpose of God's fire is not to destroy us, but it is to refine us. Zechariah 13 verse 9 makes it clear. He brings us through the fire. He says, I'll bring this one third left into the fire. Why does he say that? He says because I will refine them as the refinement of silver, and I will test them as the testing of gold. They will call on my name, and I will answer them. I will say they are my people, and they will say the Lord is my God. You see, refining removes what doesn't belong so that what is precious remains. [00:31:07] (47 seconds)
When something is taken through the fire, like gold or silver, it is to burn out all of the impurities. Even, and we will talk about this in a minute, when a potter takes his clay and the vessel that he has created, it needs to go through the fire. The reason is because all of the moisture and everything that will cause that vessel to be brittle is burned out, and it is hardened so that it is able to withstand the use that it was prepared for. That's what God does with us. He takes us through the fire, and he burns out the things that will cause us to be weak and to be brittle and not to be able to carry His glory out to the world. [00:31:54] (43 seconds)
If you take that pottery that has not been refined and you try to fill it with something, it's just going to fall apart. So there's a process of refining that has to take place. That vessel may look complete, but it's soft, it's fragile, and it's easily breakable. It cannot fulfill its purpose yet. So in order for it to be strengthened and made usable, it must go to the kiln, the furnace. [00:37:41] (29 seconds)
The intense heat of the kiln removes all moisture, hardens the clay, and permanently sets the vessel's shape. And that's God doing what you may not understand is when you're going through the fire, sometimes God's just setting your shape. He's just permanently setting your shape so you can withstand what is in store for you. [00:41:55] (32 seconds)
We ask Christ into our lives, the Holy Spirit begins a work in us, but during that process there are still things that remain from prior to us receiving salvation. So as we are purified by that fire, those things are burned out, and what is left is those things that bring glory and honor, and that's the process that needs to take place in our lives. It is to refine us, to purify us, to sanctify us. Impurities are removed, holiness is produced and revealed in our lives. We begin to reflect the image of Christ. [00:50:43] (44 seconds)
There’s a process to the refining, and the refining takes place to prepare us so that we can be vessels of honor, worthy to carry the glory of God. You see, maturity is the product of refining, so we must yield to the fire, and then we've got to let God burn away what cannot stay. [01:02:03] (18 seconds)
The refining fire removes everything that's not rooted in Christ. It burns away what is not of God so we can be vessels of honor. But here's what I want to ask you this morning: if we resist the fire, how will we ever be prepared to carry the glory of God? If we resist him when he begins to burn out those things in our life that stand in the way and we hang on to them, how can we ever carry the glory of God? You've got to let go. [01:03:31] (29 seconds)
Pentecost was not just power manifested. It was purity established. When they walked out of that room, hallelujah, they were completely different than when they walked in. That fire refines, and then it empowers. When they walked in the upper room, what did Peter do? He said there's a matter that we have to resolve. And they got things out of the way so that they would be in one mind and one accord. And then what happened? The power of God fell, and Peter, the same one who denied Christ three times, is the same one who preached with boldness, and thousands came to know Jesus. That's what the fire does. Refined by fire, then filled with fire. That's the pattern. God purifies us so he can pour into us. [01:10:45] (69 seconds)
The fire will remove the things that stand in the way that keep you from accomplishing God's purpose for your life. Don't resist the flame. Let it burn. Let it burn out everything that would keep you from doing what God has called you to do. [01:13:54] (20 seconds)
