Bible reading: Luke 22:24-34, 47-51 (ESV)
A dispute also arose among them, as to which of them was to be regarded as the greatest. And he said to them, “The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those in authority over them are called benefactors. But not so with you. Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves. For who is the greater, one who reclines at table or one who serves? Is it not the one who reclines at table? But I am among you as the one who serves. “You are those who have stayed with me in my trials, and I assign to you, as my Father assigned to me, a kingdom, that you may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel. “Simon, Simon, behold, Satan demanded to have you, that he might sift you like wheat, but I have prayed for you that your faith may not fail. And when you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” Peter said to him, “Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death.” Jesus said, “I tell you, Peter, the rooster will not crow this day, until you deny three times that you know me.”... While he was still speaking, there came a crowd, and the man called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He drew near to Jesus to kiss him, but Jesus said to him, “Judas, would you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?” And when those who were around him saw what would follow, they said, “Lord, shall we strike with the sword?” And one of them struck the servant of the high priest and cut off his right ear. But Jesus said, “No more of this!” And he touched his ear and healed him.
Observation questions
- In the dispute among the disciples, what was the worldly view of greatness that Jesus contrasted with his own teaching?
- What specific request did Satan make regarding the disciples, and what was Jesus's specific response for Peter? [20:23]
- How did Peter react when the armed group came to arrest Jesus, and what was Jesus's immediate response to that action? [28:44]
- What does Jesus's act of healing the servant's ear reveal about his character and mission, even in a moment of betrayal and violence? [35:09]
Interpretation questions
- Jesus says the greatest should become like the youngest and the leader like a servant. In that culture, what was the status of the youngest and a servant, and why is this such a radical redefinition of power?
- Jesus allowed Peter to be sifted, knowing he would fail. How does this concept of divinely permitted testing differ from punishment, and what is its ultimate purpose? [49:19]
- Peter was armed and ready to fight for Jesus, yet his actions were rebuked. Why was his passionate, defensive reaction not what Jesus wanted in that moment? [43:46]
- The arrest involved a heavily armed cohort. Given that Jesus had just demonstrated supernatural power by knocking them to the ground, what does his subsequent surrender say about the nature of his mission? [40:06]
Application questions
- In what areas of your life (work, family, church) are you tempted to seek status or recognition rather than looking for ways to serve others? What is one practical step you can take this week to take the lower place?
- Self-confidence is not the same as spiritual readiness. [47:47] Where have you been relying on your own passion, bold words, or strength instead of cultivating a humble dependence on God? What does moving from self-reliance to God-reliance look like for you right now?
- God often uses seasons of sifting to refine us. [20:23] What is a current challenge or failure that you can choose to see not as God's abandonment, but as his loving tool to form something stronger and more faithful in you?
- Peter reacted with a sword when he felt Jesus was threatened. When you or your beliefs are challenged, what is your impulsive, "sword-swinging" reaction? How can you learn to respond with the surrendered, healing posture of Christ instead? [35:09]
- The journey is from being a spectator of faith to a participator. [07:22] What does moving from watching to actively serving look like in your current season? Is there a specific area God is inviting you to step into, even if you feel unready?
- Jesus knew Peter better than Peter knew himself. [46:39] Where is there a gap between how you see yourself and how God sees you? How can you better align your identity with his view of you as his redeemed and restored child?
