Exodus chapter 12 opens the great root of redemption. The Lord speaks to Moses and Aaron in Egypt and makes that month “the beginning of months,” because a people redeemed by blood must have a new beginning, a new calendar, a new life. The chapter stands pivotal, because everything before it points toward redemption, and everything after it shows the benefits and responsibilities of the redeemed of the Lord.
The lamb in Exodus must be “without blemish,” without defect within and without. That spotless lamb points forward to Christ, the Lamb of God, whose precious blood is without blemish and without spot. First Peter declares that redemption does not come by silver and gold, but by the precious blood of Christ. The perfect Lamb gives full redemption, total redemption, complete redemption, perpetual redemption, eternal redemption.
The Passover also brings forth a new nation. Israel comes out of Egypt as a people born by the blood of the lamb. First Peter applies that same reality to the people of God as “a chosen generation,” “a royal priesthood,” and “a holy nation.” The redeemed people become peculiar, different from the world in thought, mind, spirit, attitude, disposition, and character.
The unleavened bread shows that the redeemed life must not carry the leaven of Egypt. Paul says, “Purge out therefore the old leaven,” because leaven represents malice, wickedness, hatred, anger, animosity, falsehood, and deception. The blood saves and secures, but leaven must not be allowed in the heart. Sincerity and truth become the bread of the redeemed.
The eating of the lamb gives strength for the journey. The flesh of the lamb in Exodus points to Christ, the Word made flesh. John 6 explains that the flesh profits nothing, but the words of Christ are spirit and life. Feeding on the Lamb means receiving the word of God, not as the word of men, but as the word that effectually works in those that believe.
The blood on the doorpost must be applied. The blood in the basin is not enough. Christ has shed His blood, but the sinner must personally believe, personally appropriate, personally apply that blood by faith. When God sees the blood, judgment passes over. The applied blood gives preservation, pardon, purity, sanctification, power to do the will of God, and dominion through the atoning blood of the Lamb.
Key Takeaways
- 1. The blood must be applied [53:28] The basin did not save the house until the blood was struck upon the doorpost. Christ’s blood is sufficient in itself, yet the sinner must personally trust that blood by faith. Redemption is not a general religious idea, but a definite personal application before God. [53:28]
- 2. Leaven must be fully forsaken [43:37] A little leaven leavens the whole lump, and sin never remains small when it is entertained. Malice, wickedness, hatred, false doctrine, and deception all spread quietly but powerfully. The redeemed life must search out leaven from every source and live with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth. [43:37]
- 3. The Lamb gives strength for pilgrimage [39:19] Israel ate the lamb with shoes on the feet and staff in the hand, ready to depart from Egypt. Christ gives life through His word, because the Word became flesh and His words are spirit and life. Spiritual strength comes as the soul feeds on the Word, receives it as God’s word, and follows the Lamb in readiness. [39:19]
- 4. Every generation must be born again [29:20] The redemption of one generation cannot stand in place of the repentance and faith of another. The fathers’ salvation is not enough for the children, and the past experience of the church is not enough for the present generation. Each person must come individually, repent individually, and believe in the shed blood individually. [29:20]
- 5. Christ’s steps forbid retaliation [46:28] Christ suffered without sin, without guile, without reviling back, and without threats. The redeemed who follow His steps commit honor, reputation, past, present, and future into the hands of Him that judges righteously. The blood that saves also forms a people who refuse revenge and leave judgment with God. [46:28]
