Let Us Rededicate Our Families (Joshua 24:15) - 6/21/2026

Joshua 24 places Israel at Shechem at a decisive time, at the end of Joshua’s life, when the future of the people depended not mainly on armies or victories, but on spiritual direction in the homes. Joshua does not speak casually. Joshua speaks as an old man who had walked with God from his youth, who had seen the plagues, the Passover, the Red Sea, the wilderness, Jericho, and the promised land.

Joshua begins by reminding the people of God’s faithfulness. God chose Abraham when Abraham was on the other side of the river, even among people who served other gods. God found Abraham first, made the covenant, gave the promises, and started the whole plan. God brought Israel out of Egypt when Israel had no army, no power, and no real hope. God confronted Pharaoh, sent the plagues, parted the Red Sea, fed the people with manna, gave water from the rock, guided them by cloud and fire, and showed mercy even when they rebelled.

Joshua makes clear that Israel is living in a land for which they did not labor, in cities they did not build, eating from vineyards and olive groves they did not plant. Joshua wants gratitude to come first, because gratitude is the soil where dedication grows. Before the people can choose rightly, the people must remember rightly. Not one good word of the Lord had failed. All came to pass.

Joshua then calls Israel to a clear decision. The people must choose whether to serve the gods from the other side of the river, the gods of the Amorites, or the Lord. Joshua rejects the idols around him and makes a public declaration for his household. Joshua leads his home not as a dictator, but as a spiritual leader, like a shepherd, taking responsibility before God.

The passage then presses the same responsibility into families today. God centered homes need leaders whose children see prayer, Scripture, worship, integrity, humility, forgiveness, and love. The idols may not be carved statues, but materialism, entertainment, self centeredness, compromise, and busyness can still pull hearts away from God. Every generation must choose the Lord for itself.

Joshua leads the people into covenant renewal. The people answer with commitment, put away foreign gods, and stand as witnesses against themselves. The stone at Shechem becomes a witness, reminding them not to deny God. A God centered family becomes like a lighthouse in the community, a place where God’s presence is felt, God’s word is honored, God’s love is shown, and God’s mission is lived out.
