Romans 5 reveals the incredible truth that through Jesus Christ, we have received an abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness. This is not something we can earn or achieve by our own efforts; it is a gift freely given by God. Our best attempts at righteousness fall short, but Jesus took our place in sin so that we could take His place in right standing with God. This restoration of fellowship is the foundation for reigning in life through Christ. Just as Adam was the original “master copy” for humanity, and his fall affected all, Jesus is the new master copy, restoring what was lost and making us new.
But the key word in all of this is “receive.” God has already provided everything we need—wisdom, healing, provision, and more—through the finished work of Jesus. Too often, we leave these gifts unopened, like seeds left on a windowsill or presents never unwrapped. The challenge is not in God’s giving, but in our receiving. We must learn to receive what God has already made available, not by striving or earning, but by faith.
Receiving from God involves several practical steps. First, we must ask. Jesus said, “Ask, and it will be given to you.” Many miss out simply because they never ask. Second, we need to rejoice. Joy and praise are not just responses to blessings; they are keys that unlock our ability to receive. Even in trials, rejoicing in the Lord positions us to receive the end of our faith. Third, we must raise our expectations. Like the man at the temple gate who looked at Peter and John expecting to receive, our hope and expectation should be set on God’s goodness. Every time we open the Word, every time we pray, we should come with a readiness to receive.
God is not holding back. He daily loads us with benefits, forgives all our iniquities, heals all our diseases, redeems our lives from destruction, and crowns us with lovingkindness. The invitation is to become a “wide receiver”—to open our hearts, lift our hope, and receive all that God has for us. Let’s not leave His gifts on the shelf, but step into the fullness of what He’s provided, with faith, joy, and great expectation.
Romans 5:15-17 (ESV) — > But the free gift is not like the trespass. For if many died through one man’s trespass, much more have the grace of God and the free gift by the grace of that one man Jesus Christ abounded for many. And the free gift is not like the result of that one man’s sin. For the judgment following one trespass brought condemnation, but the free gift following many trespasses brought justification. For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ.
Matthew 7:7-8 (ESV) — > Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened.
Psalm 103:1-5 (ESV) — > Bless the Lord, O my soul, and all that is within me, bless his holy name! Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.
