9 6 26 - Receipt | Week 1: What’s On the Receipt?

A crumpled receipt from Freddie’s becomes more than proof of a purchase. The receipt points back to a hard week, an easier dinner, a son’s favorite restaurant, and a family outing that carried real relationships inside it. The receipts in a person’s life are never just isolated transactions because spending is tied closely to the heart, the people nearby, and the things a person values.

Jesus names that connection in Luke 12 when he calls his followers to give to those in need and store up treasure in heaven. Jesus says that wherever treasure is, the desires of the heart will be there too. The economy may make money conversations feel stressful, awkward, and anxiety inducing, but Jesus does not avoid the subject because discipleship reaches all the way into a wallet.

The first myth says that money is a very private thing. Matthew 6 does call generosity to be free from trumpet-blowing, look-at-me religion, but Jesus critiques the heart posture rather than public acts themselves. The hypocrite gives to get a pat on the back, and that applause becomes the only reward. Matthew 5 then shows the other side: good deeds can shine out for all to see when they point people toward the goodness of God rather than the goodness of the giver.

The second myth says that God wants the person but not the money. The gospel really does invite people to come empty handed, with no clever talk and no gift able to earn God’s love. Yet the heart cannot be separated from the treasure it is chasing. The rich young man in Mark 10 runs to Jesus, kneels before him, and sincerely asks what he must do to inherit eternal life. Jesus lovingly exposes the place where the man’s heart is stuck, calling him to sell his possessions, give to the poor, and follow.

The rich young man walks away sad because a deeply held myth is hard to let go of. The unnamed man becomes a mirror for every person who wants Jesus near but hesitates when Jesus touches a treasured part of life. The receipts connected to relationships can become an honest way to ask where the heart is leaning. Jesus invites a different posture: not walking away sad, but leaning in and saying, “Good teacher, show me how to follow.”
