“We are sold this bill of goods that that we won't find contentment when we seek after godliness. But the Bible tells us that that we will find contentment through godliness. See the church in Ephesus that that that Timothy was pastoring they they were facing several challenges during this time. They were they were dealing with some discontentment. It is it is implied from the passage the Ephesus it was a major uh commercial city. It was a hub for the Roman Empire known for its wealth and its uh prosperity.”
“The city's wealth and focus on trade. The business likely influenced some of the church members to prioritize accumulating wealth. It is this prioritation of accumulating wealth that led to dis discontentment when their material desires were not fulfilled. Furthermore, the believers in in Ephesus like others throughout the Roman Empire face persecution and social rejection in this community focused society.”
“These struggles could lead to discouragement. It could lead to dissatisfaction as believers fought to reconcile their faith with the daily hardships they live through of hostility that they face while trying to find their place in the world because of their faith in Christ. It is it is interesting that that when you live for Christ, things don't really get easier.”
“The reality is if we are going to reboot our reality, we need to unsubscribe from our attachment to these curated versions of reality that that that constantly entice us to chase after what they say our lives should look like, what they say our lives should feel like. We must do this if we are going to find true contentment in Christ Jesus.”
“It is here that we will actually realize that we will find more in life if we chase less. We will find more in life if we chase less. As we come to our third installment in our series, Reboot Your Reality, I want to ask you to meet me in First Timothy.”
“Paul urging Timothy to promote contentment and godliness was a response to these challenges that they were facing. Encouraging the church to find true fulfillment in spiritual growth and a closer relationship with God rather than the temporary, often misleading appeal of wealth and social status.”
“When you have the love of money, strife does not is not far behind. Why do we have all of these bands that grow up and soon as the money flows in? It's a matter of time before strife comes up, somebody is making more money than the other person and the best friends become enemies. Why? Because where there is the love of money, strife is not far behind.”
“But I have to say, just like the believers in Ephesus, we also face messages that tell us that we need more to be happy. But Paul's word to Timothy reminds us that godliness combined with contentment is great gain. So, so what does this look like in our world today? The idea of finding more in life by chasing less remains as relevant today as it did in the first century to Timothy.”
“Sometimes we have to take some time to sharpen our axe. Wondering why things are so hard. Wondering why we can't seem to get ahead. Wondering why this is always so difficult. Maybe we need to take some time to sharpen our axe. This sounds crazy because we live in a culture filled with this falsehood that we are driven in this age that is driven by consumerism.”
“Whether you watch these shows or not, whether you participate or not, all you have to do is walk through Macy's. All you have to do is walk through the parking lot as you begin to look at other people's cars and and begin to look at other people's shoes and and clothes and right then and there without any influence you you you find yourself trapped in the quicksand of comparison.”
“But we find ourselves chasing so much out of competition, out of comparison, out of pride, out of low self-esteem that we won't reach where we're trying to get to because we're so busy running and chasing after somebody else. See, this is the restless comparison and competition where where I am only feeling good about myself when I know that I'm beating you.”
“And then this disconnects us from our ability to be faithful to what God has given us. Because to be faithful means to be focused. And I can't be focused if I'm worrying about what you're doing. If I'm worrying about what you got. If I'm worrying about where you shop. If I'm worried about the car you drive and where you live. I'm not focused.”
“Godliness brings contentment because we are not spending our lives chasing after things but rather we are resting and receiving what God has for me because what God has for me is for me. It doesn't matter what you do. It doesn't matter how successful you are. It doesn't matter where you work. It doesn't matter how much you spend. What God has for me is for me.”
“Therefore, Timothy's assignment was to proclaim the gospel truth to a vulnerable church surrounded by false doctrine and teachings that encourage behavior leading to strife and the love of money.”
“See, faith in God is not just about relying on him for everything we need in instead it is a active interactive partnering relationship because as we walk with him and and talk with him, it's not so much that we're earning the blessings. We're just putting oursel in position to to receive them. See, see, sometimes you got to be in position. It's not so much about how you earn it.”
“Recognizing that we have complete dependence on God with gratitude is the first sign of having a right relationship with God. See, faith in God is not just about relying on him for everything we need in instead it is a active interactive partnering relationship because as we walk with him and and talk with him, it's not so much that we're earning the blessings. We're just putting oursel in position to to receive them.”
