Sunday Message - What Does Real Love Look Like?

God’s fences are not put up because he is stingy, controlling, or out of touch. Fences keep danger out, keep children safe, and show where life actually works. The picture of a three year old testing the street makes the point pretty clear: a boundary can feel limiting to the child and still be deeply loving from the parent.

God has placed boundaries in the universe because he made life and knows how it works. The Garden of Eden shows the first fence, where God says the humans can eat from every tree except the one that will kill them. The forbidden tree looked promising, but it was a false tree of life, a way of taking authority to define good and evil in human eyes. Human sin tore down the fence, let the enemy in, and sent the world into haywire.

Exodus 34 gives the whole picture of God, not just the part that fits modern tastes. Yahweh names himself compassionate, merciful, slow to anger, full of unfailing love, and ready to forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin. But the same text refuses to let guilt slide as if evil does not matter. Parents’ sins really do spill onto children. Sin runs in families like DNA. God’s holiness keeps going after sin until evil is gone and the enemy is back outside the fence.

Numbers 14 puts that whole truth on display. Israel sees God’s glory, walks through the Red Sea, eats his provision, and still says, in effect, “God, this promised land is not safe and your way cannot be trusted.” God forgives them when Moses appeals to his mercy, but that generation still does not enter the land. Forgiveness is real, and consequences are real.

Jesus carries the same reality into the Sermon on the Mount. The house on the rock is not merely hearing Jesus or claiming him, but hearing his words and putting them into practice. The house on sand is the life that ignores his way and then acts surprised when the storm takes it down.

Selective Bible reading creates a made up god who agrees with everything and has no staying power when trouble comes. The call to truth is not a license to fix strangers or act like a jerk. Truth belongs inside love, trust, and relationship. Jesus looks at the rich young ruler and loves him, then tells him the one thing he does not want to hear. God’s love includes mercy for the lost sheep, a road home for the prodigal, and a clear command: go and sin no more.
