The Word of God comes like real nutrition, not junk food, and James brings that kind of medicine right into the body. The Word does not always taste good because it attacks what is sick, but the Word also washes, waters, readjusts attitudes, and renews a right mind. James moves from the fruit of gossip, bitterness, jealousy, lying, quarrels, and fights to the root underneath it all. James says the wars outside are coming from the evil desires at war within.

James exposes prayer that treats God like a genie in a lamp. The text does not allow “ask and receive” to become law of attraction, metaphysics, or new age confession where somebody speaks an atmosphere into existence. God answers what lines up with his will. God welcomes prayers for holiness, patience, joy, witness, and obedience, but God also deals honestly with motives, stewardship, and divided loyalty.

James calls spiritual adultery what it is. Friendship with the world is not simply knowing lost people or being around sinners, because Jesus sat with tax collectors, wine bibbers, and notorious sinners on assignment. Friendship with the world means adopting the culture, courting the world, leaning on its system, and trying to court God at the same time. The church may befriend the lost as salt and light, but when influence turns the wrong direction, the assignment is over.

God’s jealousy is not insecurity. God is not jealous of what anybody has, because God made heaven and earth. God is jealous over his people because the Spirit he placed within them should be faithful to him. The Word must be rightly divided so that ignorance, false revelation, and angel of light deception do not pull believers into universalism, new age religion, or any gospel that is not the gospel.

Grace comes in right after James swings the chainsaw at the roots. God opposes the proud, the self sufficient one who says, “I got this,” but God gives grace to the humble. Humility brings God into the situation and admits, “I cannot do this in my own strength.” The devil can wrestle, but he cannot pin the servant of God who trusts the Father.

James gives the order. Humble yourself before God, resist the devil, and he will flee. Sexual immorality is different, that is not something to negotiate with, that is something to flee. God says, draw close, and God will come close, not after a life is cleaned up, but through the blood of Jesus Christ. Then God gets down to business: wash hands, purify hearts, stop laughing at sin, take accountability, and trust that at the proper time the Lord will lift up the humble.

“What is causing the quarrels and fights among you? Don’t they come from the evil desires at war within you? You want what you don’t have, so you scheme and kill to get it. You are jealous of what others have, but you can’t get it, so you fight and wage war to take it away from them. Yet you don’t have what you want because you don’t ask God for it.
