Acts 18 begins with Paul going into the synagogue again, even after those earlier moments when he had said, “From now on, I will go to the Gentiles.” Paul’s pattern shows that a single statement, taken by itself, can give a person the wrong idea about what God wants. Paul later writes in Romans that the gospel is for everyone who believes, “first for the Jew, then for the Gentile.” The whole Bible makes clear what one isolated verse cannot.
Context matters because a verse sits somewhere. A person on one seat of a bus tells something true, but not enough to describe everybody on the bus. Scripture works that way too. God’s Word must be read from the front of the Bible to the back of the Bible when believers are trying to understand what God says about any subject.
Slavery gives a painfully obvious example. Ephesians and Titus tell bondservants how to live under earthly masters, and some people used those words to defend owning another human being. Genesis says that every human being is made in God’s image. Ezekiel says, “All souls are mine,” and condemns oppression, robbery, and injustice. God’s ownership of every soul means that no person has the right to own another person as property.
The Bible can get used to defend behavior that the Bible itself condemns when people grab a verse here and a verse there and run with them. Laziness, sloppiness, and the desire to believe what somebody already wants to believe can all produce that kind of Bible reading. The result is often people getting smashed over the head with verses that have been pulled out of context.
The so-called Jesus hermeneutic makes the same mistake by treating only the red letters as authoritative and tossing out the black ink. Christ’s words are extremely important, but the Holy Spirit gave all Scripture. Paul’s letters, Peter’s letters, the Old Testament, Acts, Revelation, and every other part belong to the Word God breathed out.
All Scripture is profitable for teaching, reproof, correction, and training in righteousness. The church needs a spiritual allergy to anybody who says some parts of the Bible matter while other parts do not. God wrote His book so that every part must be taken seriously. His Word remains a lamp to the feet and a light to the path in a world that can feel like a minefield.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Context keeps Scripture from being twisted. Context does not merely add helpful background to a favorite verse. Context tells readers what a statement means, why it was spoken, and how it fits with everything else God has said. A conclusion drawn from one verse alone may be exactly opposite to God’s intention. [28:14]
- 2. Every human soul belongs to God. God’s image in humanity gives every person a dignity that no earthly owner can erase. Ezekiel’s words, “All souls are mine,” cut through every claim that one person can possess another. Oppression is not just cruelty toward a neighbor; it is rebellion against the God who made and owns that neighbor. [36:40]
- 3. Red letters require black ink too. Christ’s own words cannot be honored by dismissing the Scriptures Christ affirmed and the apostles He authorized. A Bible made of only preferred portions becomes a Bible remade in somebody’s own image. The authority of Scripture stands or falls as a whole. [45:02]
- 4. All Scripture equips God’s people. God breathed out all Scripture because His people need more than nicey, nicey greeting card stuff. Correction and reproof can be just as necessary as comfort, because God intends His people to be complete and equipped for every good work. The whole Bible is God’s gift for walking through a confusing world.
