Radical Devotion: Deepening Our Relationship with God
Devotional
Day 1: Delve Deep into Scripture's Richness
Understanding the Bible requires more than a cursory read; it demands a deep dive into its profound meanings. Many approach the Bible as they would a newspaper, skimming through without truly grasping its depth. To truly understand biblical concepts, such as humility, one must seek their true meanings. Humility, often misunderstood as mere meekness, is exemplified by Jesus as obedience to God and acting according to His will, regardless of public opinion. This deeper understanding transforms how we live and interact with the world. [02:22]
"For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart." (Hebrews 4:12, ESV)
Reflection: What is one biblical concept you have skimmed over in the past? How can you commit to studying it more deeply this week?
Day 2: Worship Beyond Words
True worship transcends singing and praising; it involves offering our most precious things to God. Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac is a profound example of this. Worship signifies that nothing in our lives should take precedence over God. Many unknowingly idolize jobs, possessions, or relationships, allowing these to overshadow their devotion to God. Worship requires recognizing that everything we have is a loan from God, and we must be willing to give it up if He asks. [17:40]
"Offer to God a sacrifice of thanksgiving, and perform your vows to the Most High, and call upon me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you shall glorify me." (Psalm 50:14-15, ESV)
Reflection: Identify one thing in your life that you may be placing above God. How can you offer it to Him as an act of worship today?
Day 3: Building a Relationship with God
Our relationship with God involves stages: prayer, thanksgiving, praise, and worship. Each stage builds upon the previous, leading to a deeper connection with God. Prayer involves asking for our needs, thanksgiving acknowledges God's blessings, praise focuses on God's attributes, and worship is the ultimate surrender of our lives to Him. This progression helps us grow spiritually and strengthens our bond with God. [12:19]
"Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you." (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18, ESV)
Reflection: Which stage of your relationship with God do you find most challenging? What practical step can you take today to grow in that area?
Day 4: Recognizing God's Ownership
Recognize that everything we have is a loan from God. We must be willing to give it up if He asks, understanding that our possessions, jobs, and relationships should not overshadow our devotion to Him. This perspective shifts our focus from earthly attachments to eternal values, reminding us of the temporary nature of worldly possessions. [27:39]
"The earth is the Lord's and the fullness thereof, the world and those who dwell therein." (Psalm 24:1, ESV)
Reflection: What is one possession or relationship you hold tightly to? How can you practice viewing it as a loan from God today?
Day 5: Radical Devotion to God
Be radical in your devotion to God, especially as young people. Just as others sacrifice for lesser causes, we should give our all for the greatest cause—living for Jesus. True worshipers can genuinely say, "All that I have is Yours, Lord," and mean it with their whole heart. This radical devotion calls for a life fully surrendered to God's will, prioritizing His desires above our own. [43:09]
"And he said to all, 'If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.'" (Luke 9:23, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you find yourself holding back from surrendering to Jesus? What would surrendering this area to Him actually look like in terms of daily habits?
Sermon Summary
In today's message, I emphasized the importance of understanding the Bible deeply, rather than just reading it superficially. Many people approach the Bible like a newspaper, skimming through without grasping its profound meanings. Just as we use a dictionary to understand difficult words, we should seek to understand the true meanings of biblical concepts, such as humility. The world often misinterprets humility as mere meekness, but true humility, as exemplified by Jesus, involves obedience to God and acting according to His will, regardless of public opinion.
I also discussed the concept of worship, which goes beyond singing and praising. True worship involves offering our most precious things to God, as demonstrated by Abraham's willingness to sacrifice Isaac. This act of worship signifies that nothing in our lives should take precedence over God. Many Christians unknowingly idolize their jobs, possessions, or relationships, allowing these to overshadow their devotion to God. Worship requires us to recognize that everything we have is a loan from God, and we must be willing to give it up if He asks.
Furthermore, I highlighted the stages of our relationship with God: prayer, thanksgiving, praise, and worship. Each stage builds upon the previous one, leading us to a deeper connection with God. Prayer involves asking for our needs, thanksgiving acknowledges God's blessings, praise focuses on God's attributes, and worship is the ultimate surrender of our lives to Him.
Finally, I encouraged everyone, especially young people, to be radical in their devotion to God. Just as people are willing to sacrifice for lesser causes, we should be willing to give our all for the greatest cause—living for Jesus. True worshipers are those who can genuinely say, "All that I have is Yours, Lord," and mean it with their whole heart.

Sermon Clips
In my life I just accepted what other people said was worship. Because I was young, and many more much older and godly men, I discovered even godly men can be wrong. Only the Bible is right. I started studying the Bible to see in the New Testament what is worship. [06:18]
There are four stages. The first is prayer. That's why we begin even our salvation. We ask in the forgiveness. Throughout our life we need prayer. We ask God for help. We ask God for healing. We ask God for power. Many, many earthly things, spiritual things. Prayer. We all must pray. [07:47]
The second level is Thanksgiving. Many people pray, very few people give thanks. Look at your own life. The number of things you ask God for, when God answered them, you were happy. Did you go to God and say, "Lord, thank you for answering my prayer?" [09:01]
In Thanksgiving, I'm thinking of what God has done for me. In praise, I'm not at all thinking of my needs. I'm not even thinking of what God has done for me. Now I'm thinking of who God is, and I'm praising him. You are holy, you are mighty, you are sovereign. [11:01]
Worship is going beyond these other three stages. We must go to the Bible to understand what worship is. Let me show you some verses. The first time the word worship comes in the Bible is Genesis chapter 22, where God told Abraham, "Take your son and offer him up to me." [13:31]
Abraham told his young men, "You stay here. We will worship there and then return to you." What do you think Abraham thought he was going to do on top of the mountain? If you understand that, you'll understand worship. He wasn't going up there just to clap his hands and sing. [17:28]
When you have no children after 50 years of marriage, then you have a son, he will be more precious than even your wife. Over 25 years, he had watched his son Isaac. Isaac had become an idol in his life. He spent so much time with Isaac, he didn't have so much time to spend with God. [18:06]
There are a lot of Christians who worship their business or their job. They worship their houses, their car. There are many idols that Christians have in their life. God says they have not noticed that idol has taken the place of me in your life. [19:56]
Everything God gives us on this earth is a loan. God gives it to you for your lifetime on earth. Your money which you earned is a loan from God. It's not yours. All that you earned, all that your business profited, it's not yours. Everything on the earth belongs to God. [27:39]
I want to say to all of you young people, especially, start when you're young. Make it your ambition to worship God. Don't be like the other young people around you. Be a wholehearted radical. See how these Naxalites and Maoists are all radical for their foolish cause. [43:09]
Why can't we be like that for the greatest thing in the world, to live for Jesus? Once you're like that, even if your words, when you speak, are broken words for God, it is worship. May God help us. [43:49]
I want to say to all of you young people, especially, start when you're young. Make it your ambition to worship God. Don't be like the other young people around you. Be a wholehearted radical. See how these Naxalites and Maoists are all radical for their foolish cause. [43:09]
