Bible ReadingActs 12:1–19 About that time Herod the king laid violent hands on some who belonged to the church. He killed James the brother of John with the sword, and when he saw that it pleased the Jews, he proceeded to arrest Peter also. This was during the days of Unleavened Bread. And when he had seized him, he put him in prison, delivering him over to four squads of soldiers to guard him, intending after the Passover to bring him out to the people.
[52:43]So Peter was kept in prison, but earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church. Now when Herod was about to bring him out, on that very night, Peter was sleeping between two soldiers, bound with two chains, and sentries before the door were guarding the prison.
[53:38]And behold, an angel of the Lord stood next to him, and a light shone in the cell. He struck Peter on the side and woke him, saying, “Get up quickly.” And the chains fell off his hands. And the angel said to him, “Dress yourself and put on your sandals.” And he did so. And he said to him, “Wrap your cloak around you and follow me.”
[01:02:30]And he went out and followed him. He did not know that what was being done by the angel was real, but thought he was seeing a vision. When they had passed the first and the second guard, they came to the iron gate leading into the city. It opened for them of its own accord, and they went out and went along one street, and immediately the angel left him.
[01:04:34]When Peter came to himself, he said, “Now I am sure that the Lord has sent his angel and rescued me from the hand of Herod and from all that the Jewish people were expecting.” When he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John whose other name was Mark, where many were gathered together and were praying.
[01:08:06]And when he knocked at the door of the gateway, a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer. Recognizing Peter’s voice, in her joy she did not open the gate but ran in and reported that Peter was standing at the gate. They said to her, “You are out of your mind.” But she kept insisting that it was so, and they kept saying, “It is his angel!” But Peter continued knocking, and when they opened, they saw him and were amazed. But motioning to them with his hand to be silent, he described to them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, “Tell these things to James and to the brothers.” Then he departed and went to another place. Now when day came, there was no little disturbance among the soldiers over what had become of Peter.
[01:10:38]John 21:18–19 “Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go.” (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, “Follow me.”

Interpretation questions- Jesus told Peter that he would glorify God in death “when you are old.” How could that word have shaped Peter’s peace on the night Herod planned his execution? [01:01:43]
- Acts 5 describes an earlier empty prison, while Acts 12 describes sixteen soldiers guarding Peter. What might Herod’s heavy guard reveal about his fear of what God had done before? [58:21]
- The angel tells Peter to dress himself and follow, and then the iron gate opens. What does this show about the relationship between God’s power and a believer’s obedience? [01:05:09]
- The church kept praying after James had been killed, yet they struggled to believe Peter was at the gate. How can fresh grief make it difficult for believers to recognize an answer to prayer? [01:12:45]
Application questions- Peter rested because Jesus’ word was stronger than Herod’s schedule. What situation has been keeping you awake or making you count down toward a difficult date? What promise from Scripture can you hold onto in that situation? [01:01:49]
- Sometimes the opposition feels far bigger than the person facing it. Where have you been reading heavy pressure only as bad news? How might remembering God’s past faithfulness change the way you see it? [58:31]
- Peter did not stay in the cell waiting for the gate to open first; he got up, dressed himself, and followed. Is there a clear step of obedience you already know to take—an apology, a conversation, a boundary, a prayer, or a decision? What has made it hard to start walking? [01:04:43]
- Rhoda recognized Peter’s voice through a closed gate. Have there been times when God gave you encouragement, direction, or peace before you saw the full answer? What helped you recognize it? [01:08:57]
- Grief can lower the ask. Is there a prayer you once prayed boldly but have quietly changed into a smaller, safer prayer because you were disappointed or hurt? What would it look like to bring the original prayer honestly before God again? [01:15:24]
- The church was prepared for a funeral, but Peter arrived alive at the gate. Where might you be asking God only for survival or strength when you have stopped leaving room for Him to do more than you can imagine? [01:15:51]
- God moved on the very night Herod had planned to act. What would it look like for you to keep praying faithfully without trying to control God’s timing, while still believing that He is able to move suddenly? [01:18:49]
