Putting On Christ: Living with Compassion, Humility, and Patience

Paul calls God’s chosen ones, holy and dearly beloved, to “put on” the character of Christ: compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, forgiveness, and above all love. Christian behavior does not earn heaven, prove worth, or make God like somebody more. Salvation has already come through Christ, and changed people are called to live out what God has put within them.

Colossians shows that Christ should be seen in His people as they live with other people, especially at home, in family, among friends, and in the church. Christ does not merely save somebody for later glory. Christ becomes the life of the believer now, calling that person to walk, talk, and act like Him. The foot of the cross becomes the place from which a changed life begins, not the prize earned by good behavior.

The world system keeps pressing against that life. Satan still tells lies, stirs sinful impulses, and makes God’s people feel left out for refusing to go along with what is false. God’s Word gives clear guidance in the middle of that pressure, so that God’s people can know what is true and what is right. God gives everything needed to make willfully God-guided decisions, with God as the guide instead of the latest fad.

The character of Christ must come from the inside to the outside. Christ living within His people is meant to bloom and blossom in visible ways. The body of Christ is called to rejoice with those who rejoice and weep with those who weep, because one member’s pain should not be ignored by the rest of the body.

Kindness often begins with words. A harsh word may feel powerful for a moment, but a kind word at the right time can build somebody up beyond measure, like apples of gold in settings of silver. Humility frees a person from needing credit, applause, social-media attention, or recognition for every good deed. Meekness is not wimpiness or weakness. Jesus shows meekness as controlled strength, the strength to hold peace, endure suffering, and stay faithful to God’s destination.

Patience bears with people who are still struggling, still learning, and still telling the same story. Jesus bore with His disciples through repeated failure, and His people are called not to throw others away because they are imperfect. The light of Christ is not meant to blend into the darkness. God’s people may not be perfect, but their growing likeness to Jesus should make His light visible and bring glory to the Father.
