Life often pulls us in many directions—family, work, hobbies, and finances all compete for our attention. Yet, God calls us to make Him our first priority, not just another item on our busy schedules. When God is truly first, He becomes the compass that guides every decision, relationship, and pursuit. This means intentionally evaluating what drives us and making strategic choices to keep God at the center, even when life feels overwhelming. Ask yourself: what is truly guiding your heart right now, and how can you realign your priorities so that God is not in second place, but first? [25:29]
Exodus 20:3-4 (ESV)
“You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
Reflection: What is one area of your life where God has slipped into second place, and what practical step can you take today to put Him back in first?
God’s command to love Him with all our heart, soul, and strength is not just about personal devotion—it’s about trusting Him above every relationship, even those dearest to us. Placing God first doesn’t mean neglecting our loved ones; rather, it means allowing God to shape and empower our love for them. When we trust God with our relationships, He helps us become better spouses, parents, and friends. This requires surrendering control and believing that God will care for the people we love as we put Him first. [34:29]
Deuteronomy 6:5-6 (ESV)
“You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. And these words that I command you today shall be on your heart.”
Reflection: Is there a relationship in your life where you are struggling to trust God fully? What would it look like to surrender that relationship to Him today?
Our passions and hobbies are gifts from God, but they can easily become distractions if they take His place in our hearts. God invites us to delight in Him first, promising that when we do, He will shape the desires of our hearts. This doesn’t mean giving up what we love, but rather choosing God over our hobbies when priorities conflict, and inviting Him into every aspect of our lives. As we do, we discover a deeper joy and connection with God that surpasses any earthly passion. [38:35]
Psalm 37:4-5 (ESV)
“Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart. Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him, and he will act.”
Reflection: What is one hobby or passion that sometimes takes priority over God? How can you intentionally choose to delight in God first this week?
Money is one of the most powerful forces competing for first place in our lives. Jesus teaches us to seek God’s kingdom above all else, promising that God will provide for our needs. Trusting God with our finances means letting go of control, practicing generosity, and believing that God cares for every detail of our lives. When we give God our first and best, we experience His faithfulness and provision in ways that transform our hearts and priorities. [44:34]
Matthew 6:33 (ESV)
“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
Reflection: What is one step you can take to trust God more fully with your finances—whether it’s giving, budgeting, or letting go of worry?
Every season offers a fresh opportunity to reset our priorities and put God back in His rightful place. Whether you’ve drifted or simply need a new start, God invites you to confess where He’s been second and to recommit to making Him your priority. This act of surrender is not just a one-time event, but a daily choice to organize your life around God’s love and leadership. As you do, you’ll find renewed purpose, peace, and alignment in every area of your life. [48:59]
Romans 10:9 (ESV)
“Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.”
Reflection: Take a moment to honestly assess your priorities. What is one area where you need to reset and invite God to be first again? Pray and ask Him to help you start fresh today.
As the seasons shift from the busyness of summer to the routines of fall, it’s easy to find ourselves juggling family, work, hobbies, and responsibilities—sometimes at the expense of our relationship with God. Life’s demands can subtly push God from the center to the sidelines, and before we know it, our faith becomes one where God is in second place rather than first. The challenge is not just to keep God in the mix, but to intentionally and strategically put Him first in every area of our lives.
Scripture consistently calls us to this kind of priority. From the Ten Commandments in Exodus—“You must not have any other God before me”—to Jesus’ words in Matthew 6, “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness,” the invitation is clear: God desires to be at the center, not just a part of our lives. This isn’t about removing everything else we love or enjoy, but about allowing God to be the compass that guides our decisions, relationships, passions, and even our finances.
Prioritizing God means more than just attending church on Sundays. It’s about letting Him shape our daily routines, our conversations, our attitudes, and our relationships. When God is first, He doesn’t diminish our love for family or our enjoyment of hobbies; instead, He enhances them. Trusting God with our relationships means believing that He can help us love our spouses, children, and friends better than we could on our own. Delighting in God can become a passion that surpasses even our favorite hobbies, and choosing Him in the small moments leads to a deeper connection with our Creator.
Even in the area of finances, where it’s tempting to let money take first place, God calls us to trust Him by giving Him our first and best. This act of faith is not about loss, but about making room for God to provide for our needs and shape our desires. As we enter this new season, fall offers a natural opportunity to reset, reprioritize, and invite God back to the center. Whether it’s for the first time or a fresh start, the invitation is open: put God first, and let everything else find its rightful place.
Exodus 20:3-4 (ESV) — > “You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
Deuteronomy 6:5 (ESV) — > “You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”
Matthew 6:33 (ESV) — > “But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
So instead of all the other things in this world, things that we can touch, see, and experience, God says, I don't want you to worship created things. I actually want you to worship the creator. Now here's the interesting thing. Money, families, hobbies, these can all be created things and are created things, even our families. God created man and woman. God created our kids. God created everything we love. God created even the financial resources that we have. And because of that, God says, worship the creator instead of creating things. But man, you and I both know it can be hard at times to worship the creator because the created things are really, really cool every once in a while. They're really cool. [00:30:19] (57 seconds) #WorshipTheCreatorNotCreation
So what it would look like is, man, I love my family so much that I'm gonna put God first. And what happens is, when I put God first, when I put God first, it's God and family. He actually helps me love my wife better. He helps me be a better father. He helps me be a better friend. It's actually meant to be that, like, I have to actually trust God that when he's number one, he helps me with the rest of the relationships in my life. [00:35:37] (36 seconds) #ChoosingGodOverHobbies
Take delight in the Lord and he'll give you your heart's desires. What's on your heart's desire this morning? Like what's the thing that's really capturing your heart? I think if you love God, he says he's going to help you have your heart's desires. So what he wants though, is he wants us to first delight in him. [00:38:07] (20 seconds) #MoneyChallengesFaith
But what I love is that when you do put God first, you develop a passion for him that's different from anything else. And in fact, if you've ever come into a moment where there's been a desperation for God, or even you're just delighting in God, you're turning off everything in your life, and maybe you're turning on a worship song, or you're dedicating a little bit of time, and you actually, there's this connection that happens with your creator, that feeling is nothing like anything else on this earth. [00:41:41] (32 seconds) #TithingPutsGodFirst
So what he's saying is he says, put me first above all else and I'll give you everything you need. And what he's actually talking about here, he's not talking about generic things. Believe it or not, this is the moment Jesus spends an entire chapter talking about money and he's talking about money. He says, hey, seek me first above all else and then he'll give you everything that you need. Right, there's wants in this life and there's needs in this life, right? Sometimes our definition of wants and needs are different. [00:43:44] (32 seconds) #FaithThatPutsGodFirst
But this is the thing for us as Americans though that is most easily captured in the first position. And when I say there's a faith that keeps God second and makes God second, it is this thing. And it's because you can't do this thing without this thing. You really can't support this thing without this thing. And really what's interesting is that God provides this thing. But the reality is this thing is the thing that can control us the most. This is why I unapologetically talk about it all the time. And the whole reason is because money or finances or things that we store up or the stuff we love, the things we buy, they are the last thing we let go of before we really hold on to God. [00:44:24] (62 seconds) #FallResetRestartFaith
Tithing is where I'm forced. I'm not forced. I have the ability to give the first 10. The first thing that goes out, like the first check that we all write is probably for our mortgage or our rent. Before that, for the last 20 years, for my family, it's always been a tithe. A tithe of the local church of 10%, and then what happens, when I do that, I'm forced to let go. Because then I have to ask myself, am I going to make it? Have I budgeted right enough? But when I do that, I put God rightfully where he's supposed to be, in first place in my heart and in my life. [00:46:27] (37 seconds)
``But then, I love the verse, it says, seek first the kingdom of God, and then I'll give you everything else that you need. A lot of the times we think, we have to choose God and get rid of everything. What he does say is, you might need to let go of some stuff that's unhealthy, if it's taking my place. But he says, seek first me, the kingdom of God, and live righteously, and then I'll give you everything else you need. [00:47:04] (30 seconds)
But here's what he asks us. Will you have a faith that puts me in second place? Or will you have a faith that puts me in first place? And so I ask you the question this morning, what place does God sit in your life? If you were to look at all four of these, and if all these chairs were in order, one through four, where would God be in that order? [00:48:03] (36 seconds)
What I love about fall, fall is about resets. People start coming back to church in the fall. We get back into our routines in fall. Fall also gives us an opportunity to restart, to clean the slate, and to start over. And I want to invite you, maybe this is a morning that you need to restart, clean the slate, and start fresh again. I want to start by just allowing us to reprioritize everything through a simple prayer. [00:48:41] (35 seconds)
