Putting God first matters because first things first is not just a cute saying. Divine order matters. Some things do not matter much, like a kid trying to be the first one out of the car. But the first place in a life matters a great deal when it belongs to God. What comes first shapes everything that follows, and when God is first, the rest of life gets ordered under him.

The vending machine picture says it plain. A life can have all the right possibilities showing on the front, yet nothing comes out because something is out of order. God is not going to walk around putting an “out of order” sign on somebody’s chest, so the heart has to be watched. When things are not working, the issue may not be that God has failed. The issue may be that God has slipped from first place to second, third, or somewhere down the totem pole.

Jesus makes the first and greatest commandment clear. Love the Lord with all the heart, soul, and mind. God being first is not just a feeling, and it is not proved merely by serving, giving, or saying the right words. Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Love proves itself by honoring the Word, spending time with God, and learning how to live the life God actually designed.

Lordship means more than calling Jesus Savior. “Lord” means Master. Putting God first carries promises. God promises provision when his kingdom and righteousness are sought first. God promises direction, even when the path is revealed step by step and not five miles down the road. God promises peace, not through controlled circumstances, but through surrendered circumstances. God promises to bless finances when the firstfruits and tithe honor him, because the God factor changes the whole equation. God promises fulfilled purpose, even when a person gets off track, because the Lord has a way of rerouting and finishing what he started.

God does not ask for first place because he is insecure. God asks for first place because his ways are right, and that is the only order that works.
