Putting God first matters because first things first is not just a cute saying. Divine order matters. Some things do not matter much, like a kid trying to be the first one out of the car. But the first place in a life matters a great deal when it belongs to God. What comes first shapes everything that follows, and when God is first, the rest of life gets ordered under him.
The vending machine picture says it plain. A life can have all the right possibilities showing on the front, yet nothing comes out because something is out of order. God is not going to walk around putting an “out of order” sign on somebody’s chest, so the heart has to be watched. When things are not working, the issue may not be that God has failed. The issue may be that God has slipped from first place to second, third, or somewhere down the totem pole.
Jesus makes the first and greatest commandment clear. Love the Lord with all the heart, soul, and mind. God being first is not just a feeling, and it is not proved merely by serving, giving, or saying the right words. Jesus says, “If you love me, keep my commandments.” Love proves itself by honoring the Word, spending time with God, and learning how to live the life God actually designed.
Lordship means more than calling Jesus Savior. “Lord” means Master. Jesus asks, “Why do you call me Lord, Lord, and do not do what I say?” A wise life is built on hearing and doing, not hearing and ignoring. The storm hits both houses, but the house built on obedience keeps standing because Jesus is truly Lord there.
Putting God first carries promises. God promises provision when his kingdom and righteousness are sought first. Seeking the kingdom means bringing every part of life under the rule and reign of God, not just going to church and calling that enough. God promises direction, even when the path is revealed step by step and not five miles down the road. God promises peace, not through controlled circumstances, but through surrendered circumstances. God promises to bless finances when the firstfruits and tithe honor him, because the God factor changes the whole equation. God promises fulfilled purpose, even when a person gets off track, because the Lord has a way of rerouting and finishing what he started.
God does not ask for first place because he is insecure. God asks for first place because his ways are right, and that is the only order that works.

Key Takeaways
- 1. First things shape everything after Divine order is not a small issue when God is the one being placed first or pushed down the list. A life may have many good pieces, but the pieces still do not work right when the first thing is wrong. God being first is not decoration on a busy life, but the order that lets the rest of life function the way it was designed. [05:06]
- 2. Love obeys before it explains Jesus does not leave love in the realm of emotion, sentiment, or religious talk. Love becomes visible when the Word is honored and obeyed, even before every command makes perfect sense. Obedience is not God trying to dominate a life, but God teaching that life how to actually work. [14:19]
- 3. Lord means Master, not label Calling Jesus Lord does not make him Lord if the life under that name refuses his authority. Lordship brings choices, habits, relationships, money, and decisions under his rule. The gap between words and actions reveals whether Jesus is being honored as Master or only mentioned as Savior. [18:34]
- 4. Peace comes through surrender The world looks for peace by getting circumstances under control, but God gives peace when circumstances are handed over to him. Prayer does not pretend needs are not real, but it places those needs before the One who can guard the heart and mind. Perfect peace belongs to the mind stayed on God because trust has replaced the need to manage everything. [40:01]
- 5. Purpose survives every detour God’s purpose is not fragile, and a wrong turn does not have to become the final road. The Lord can reroute a life like a GPS, bringing a person back onto the path he intended. God finishes what he starts, and his purpose stands even when human plans do not.
