The Pursuit of Holiness: Ps. 32:1-6

Psalm 32 opens with that blessedness of forgiveness, that happy, happy state before God. David starts with joy because nothing is more joyful than sin forgiven, sin covered, and sin not charged to the account. The words of the Psalm are not small words. Transgression is rebellion against God. Sin is wrongdoing before the holy God. Iniquity is guilt before the Lord. God removes it, hides it from his sight, and refuses to impute it to the forgiven man.

David then adds that the happy man is the one “in whose spirit there is no deceit.” God searches the inner person. God knows the word before it is on the tongue. The old image of Adam and Eve hiding from God shows what sin does. Sin pushes the guilty soul away from fellowship, into covering up, hiding, and darkness. First John presses the same truth, because the redeemed life is not a life that says, “I have no sin.” The redeemed life is a life of confession, brokenness, and cleansing before God.

David knows that sin must be dealt with because David had lived the other way. Second Samuel 11 shows David on the roof when kings were supposed to be at battle. David saw Bathsheba, followed lust, took another man’s wife, tried to cover it up, got Uriah drunk, and finally arranged his death. The thing David had done was evil in the sight of the Lord. David thought he got away scot free, but one person saw everything.

David’s silence was not peace. Psalm 32 says his body wasted away, his groaning went on all day long, and God’s hand was heavy upon him day and night. God did not do nothing. God disciplined sin. God pressed David down until his strength dried up like heat in the summer. Hebrews 12 names that discipline as the work of a Father, not a stranger. God disciplines sons so that they may share his holiness.

David finally acknowledges his sin and stops hiding his iniquity. Confession says God is right and the sinner is wrong. God forgave the guilt of David’s sin, and Psalm 51 calls that place a broken and contrite heart. Christ brings the full answer to that guilt. The gospel declares that Jesus died for sins, bore wrath, rose again, and fully pardons all who repent and believe. The call is plain: take sin serious, stop hiding, confess before God, and come to Jesus with a repented heart.
