Bible reading: 1 Timothy 6:11–21 (ESV)
But as for you, O man of God, flee these things. Pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, steadfastness, gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called and about which you made the good confession in the presence of many witnesses. I charge you in the presence of God, who gives life to all things, and of Christ Jesus, who in his testimony before Pontius Pilate made the good confession, to keep the commandment unstained and free from reproach until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen. As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy. They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that which is truly life. O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you. Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called “knowledge,” for by professing it some have swerved from the faith. Grace be with you.
Observation questions
- What are the two primary, opposite actions commanded in verse 11, and what specific qualities are we to run towards?
- According to verses 17-19, what are the three specific commands given to those who are rich in this present age, and what is the promised result of obeying them?
- The passage mentions two different "good confessions." Who made them and in whose presence were they made (vv. 12-13)?
- What is the ultimate thing Timothy is instructed to guard, and what are the two things he must turn away from to do it (vv. 20-21)?
Interpretation questions
- Why is the Christian life described as a "fight" (v. 12)? What does it mean that it is a good fight, and what are we fighting for or against?
- The idea of "taking hold of eternal life" appears in verse 12 for Timothy and in verse 19 for the wealthy. Since eternal life is a gift, not something we earn, what does it mean in practice to "take hold" of it?
- How does the magnificent description of God in verses 15-16 serve as a motivation for the commands that come before it? What does this tell us about the connection between our theology and our daily living?
- The sermon used the illustration of a "holy sugar spoon" [52:22] to describe being set apart for God's use. How does this simple picture help explain the biblical concept of holiness and distinction from the world?
Application questions
- The call is to both flee and pursue. What is one specific thing you feel you need to "flee" from more intentionally? What is one virtue from verse 11 (righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance, gentleness) that you could more actively "pursue" this week as its replacement?
- Leadership is centered on holy character, not just skill [01:02:49]. Whether you are a leader in your home, workplace, or church, how can you prioritize cultivating inner Christlike character over simply getting tasks done or managing outcomes?
- Wealth is meant to fuel generous good deeds, not provide ultimate security [58:44]. In your current financial situation, what is one practical step you could take to be "rich in good deeds" and "generous and willing to share"?
- The awareness that "Jesus sees" is meant to give weight and purpose to our obedience [01:09:16]. How might living with a conscious sense of Christ's presence and his future appearing change your perspective on a current challenge or temptation?
- Fighting the good fight means knowing you're in a battle [01:04:27]. Where do you feel the spiritual fight is most intense in your life right now? What would it look like to "fight" there this week, not in your own strength, but by embracing the eternal life you already have in Christ?
