The question underneath so much anxiety and loneliness is, “What is my life all about?” The world says each person should make up a purpose, chase a dream, and do whatever feels right. The old silo gives a better picture: it may look like it could become anything, but it was designed for one purpose, to hold grain or silage. Human beings also have a Designer, and contentment does not come from trying to turn life into whatever seems exciting.

Solomon tried almost everything that people think will satisfy them. Solomon chased learning, relationships, great food, wealth, and all that this world could offer, yet the echo in his heart remained. Ecclesiastes says that God “has made everything beautiful in its time” and has “set eternity in the human heart.” Eternity becomes that homing beacon going beep, beep, beep, saying there is something more than Netflix, success, sports, possessions, or being the best at something.

Genesis takes the question right back to the beginning. God made human beings to reflect him, to walk with him, and to care for his good creation. God called people his family and gave them work to do with him. Relationship with God and life lived in his purposes brought peace because people were doing what they were designed to do.

Sin broke that relationship when Adam and Eve chose not to trust God. Shame, hiding, fear, and the sense that something was wrong entered the human story when humanity left the family of God. Jesus came to make things right again. Jesus forgives, restores, heals what is broken, and calls people back into trust and into the Father’s family.

Jesus lifts the anxiety and the lonely echo as his presence comes inside a person. Love, forgiveness, prayer, kindness, worship, and thankfulness become more than religious duties because they are the way human beings were made to live. Prayer brings a child honestly before the heavenly Father, and the Father gives peace that was not there at the beginning of the prayer.

The purpose of life is not necessarily something grand, like becoming prime minister, a famous athlete, or the greatest artist. The purpose of life is waking up and saying, “Hey, Dad. Let me walk today with you.” Jesus becomes the best friend who is always present, always able to comfort, guide, and protect. The kingdom is sought by seeking the King, walking with him, saying sorry when sin gets in the way, and doing what is right with his help.
