Purpose Over Popularity: Live for an Audience of One

The call to choose purpose over popularity begins with a simple truth: choices matter. The person standing today is the sum total of past choices, and the person standing tomorrow will be shaped by the choices made today. The imagination of everyone approving of a person feels good for a minute, but that dream is completely impossible. The better imagination is a life so consumed with pleasing Christ that the approval of other people just does not carry the same weight.

The problem of people pleasing grows when purpose is unknown. The life that does not know its purpose starts experimenting, searching, and asking everybody else to give it meaning. Ephesians 2:10 answers that search by saying that God created His people as His handiwork, in Christ Jesus, for good works prepared in advance. The purpose of a thing is found by asking the Creator of the thing, not the thing itself.

Galatians 1:10 draws the line clearly. Living for the approval of human beings keeps a person from being a servant of Christ. The approval of people and the purposes of God pull in different directions, and the fastest way to forget what God thinks is to become obsessed with what people think.

Hebrews 11 puts Moses right in the middle of that choice. Moses could have kept the comforts, treasures, and status of Egypt. Instead, Moses refused to be known as the son of Pharaoh’s daughter and chose mistreatment with the people of God. Moses regarded disgrace for the sake of Christ as greater value than the treasures of Egypt because he was looking ahead to his reward.

Purpose is not always one big capital P assignment. Purpose often comes in little lowercase p moments: encouraging one person, meeting one need, praying for a hard boss, being faithful in one small place. Faithfulness in those little moments becomes the place where God begins to trust a person with more.

Purpose diminishes distractions because comparison always steals joy. Nehemiah knew that when the naysayers started shouting, the great work could not stop. “Sorry, I’m doing a great work and I can’t come down” becomes the language of a life that refuses to climb down into opinions, insults, and nonsense.

Purpose also pushes through pain. The path to purpose was paved with pain for Moses, David, Esther, Mary, and Jesus. Purpose finally empowers a person to please God, because nobody can please everybody, but God can be pleased through faith, obedience, surrender, and faithfulness in the little things.
