Jesus calls the pure in heart blessed, or approved, because they will see God. The blessing of purity is not mainly about looking at Jesus with physical eyes. The promise reaches deeper than that. God lets a heart made clean by Christ see Him at work, see His glory, and see His hand in life.
The first look at the Rocky Mountains, an ocean, or a daughter in her wedding gown can catch somebody’s attention with joy, shock, and celebration. The sight of God is greater than every one of those first looks. Jesus puts the question right in front of the heart: can Christ be seen there? The fruit of the Spirit, worship, attitude, kindness, and daily choices make Jesus visible to others, but purity also lets a believer see Jesus in the mirror.
The psalmist says that the one with clean hands and a pure heart may ascend the mountain of the Lord. Purity means more than outward behavior. Motive matters. A heart can ask God for selfish reasons, prideful reasons, or because it simply wants something. A pure motive seeks the glory of God, not just a desired outcome.
Jesus exposes the opposite picture in the scribes and Pharisees. The whitewashed tomb looks beautiful outside, but dead men’s bones are inside. The clean cup on the outside can still be full of greed and self indulgence inside. Double mindedness keeps a person from seeing Jesus clearly, and it makes it hard for anybody else to see Jesus there either.
Purity of heart means being free from what taints what is pure. The clean spring becomes an image of the kind of heart God desires. Distraction, worldliness, selfishness, pride, and evil cloud spiritual vision. Single minded devotion clears the way for Christ to be seen in the church and in everyday life.
The heart includes the mind, soul, inner being, and emotions. God puts His holy finger on areas that are not fully devoted to Him: marriage, family, finances, friendships, work, and relationships. The heart left to itself is deceitful and desperately sick, but Jesus does not leave His children there.
Jesus does not call His people to manufacture perfection. Christ calls them toward completeness through daily sanctification. His grace brings purity, and daily surrender lets that purity take root and grow. Honest confession, God’s Word, and a motive centered on Jesus improve spiritual vision. Salvation gives a new heart, and eternal hope fixes the eyes on the day when God’s children shall see Christ as He is.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Purity begins with honest motives [06:23] Purity of heart reaches beneath behavior and asks why a person is seeking God. The desire for God’s glory changes prayer from getting something to honoring Someone. The heart becomes clearer when its deepest motive is Jesus rather than self. [06:23]
- 2. Outside religion cannot clean inside [08:01] Jesus warns against a life that looks right while greed, hypocrisy, and self indulgence remain untouched. Whitewashed tombs still hold death inside. Christ cleans the inside of the cup so that outward obedience becomes the fruit of a changed heart. [08:01]
- 3. Jesus gives purity, not self effort [22:27] Purity cannot be manufactured through trying harder or looking more spiritual. Christ supplies the grace and power to reject sin, repent, and walk differently. Sanctification grows as the heart comes under the authority of Jesus daily. [22:27]
- 4. God improves spiritual vision [25:34] Spiritual blindness becomes clear when a heart cannot see Jesus in areas of life. Honest confession brings the real condition of the heart before God instead of blaming someone else. God cleanses and gives clarity that lets Christ be seen again. [25:34]
- 5. A pure heart sees eternity clearly [29:30] Eternal hope does not make present holiness unimportant. The hope of seeing Christ as He is calls God’s children to prepare their hearts now. The gospel gives a new heart and turns the eyes toward the glory that is coming.
