Day 1: When Your Life Clock Ticks Like an Hourglass

Time slips through our fingers like sand, yet each grain holds eternal weight. Moses watched a generation crumble in the wilderness, their days vanishing like grass scorched by noon sun. The psalmist compares life to a fading dream, urging us to see time not as an endless clock but as an hourglass draining fast. Wisdom begins by naming the truth: our minutes are numbered, but each one can echo into forever. [49:20]

Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (Psalm 90:12, ESV)

Day 2: Viewing Life’s Parade From the Blimp

Human eyes see time as a parade—one float, one crisis, one joy at a time. God sees the whole procession from start to finish, every thread woven into His eternal tapestry. Moses anchored his prayer in this truth: the Eternal One dwells beyond clocks yet bends near to shape our character within them. What feels chaotic at ground level is being orchestrated from above. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God. (Psalm 90:2, ESV)

Day 3: The Inheritance That Outlasts 4.7 Million

CT Studd traded cricket fame and fortune for villages without Christ, his poem etching the truth: “Only what’s done for Him lasts.” Like Moses pleading for legacy, we’re called to invest in eternal currency—souls over stocks, disciples over dividends. Every choice to withhold or pour out writes our epitaph. [01:09:37]

Day 4: Chiseling Eternity Into Monday’s Granite

Moses didn’t pray for easier days but for God to “establish the work of our hands.” Eternal living happens in the grind: packing lunches, answering emails, sitting in traffic. These moments become altars when offered as raw material for His kingdom. The wilderness generation forgot that drudgery can be divine. [01:04:56]

Let your work be shown to your servants, and your glorious power to their children. Let the favor of the Lord our God be upon us, and establish the work of our hands. (Psalm 90:16-17, ESV)

Day 5: The Morning That Anchors All Your Days

“Satisfy us in the morning,” Moses begged—not with coffee or productivity, but with steadfast love. Dawn rituals shape days; days shape lifetimes. Hitting snooze on God’s presence makes hours feel disposable. But opening the blinds to His light turns ordinary mornings into launchpads for eternal impact. [01:02:05]

Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days. (Psalm 90:14, ESV)

Sermon Summary

Psalm 90 puts time on the table and asks a straight question: is time really on anybody’s side? Moses prays from the wilderness, after watching an entire generation waste their lives one day at a time. Israel had been delivered from slavery, given God’s word, shown miracles, and filled with God’s presence, yet stubborn hearts still wandered until the whole generation perished. Psalm 90 turns that tragedy into wisdom.

Moses begins with God as the dwelling place of his people. God is not just an address or a house. God is home, refuge, habitation, “from everlasting to everlasting.” The eternal God stands outside time, but he also works inside time. The current thing in front of a person is not all there is. God is working in that temporary situation from eternity and for eternity, forming eternal perspective, eternal values, and eternal character.

Moses then shows how frail life really is. Human life lasts like dust, fades like a dream, and withers like grass. The mind often treats life like a clock running on, but Psalm 90 treats life like an hourglass running out. The days drag on, but the years fly by, and the danger is not simply dying too soon. The danger is wasting the days that were given.

Psalm 90 also names the futility of sin. God’s anger toward Israel is not cold rage but the grief of holy love watching beloved people self-destruct. Their choices brought them to an end, turned their years into a sigh, and left their wilderness story as a warning. Going a person’s own way may feel free for a moment, but it can spend a whole life on what cannot last.

Moses brings the prayer to its center: “teach us to number our days.” Wisdom does not count life mainly in years, because life is lived one day at a time. Wisdom asks God each morning to satisfy the heart with steadfast love. Wisdom lets suffering produce what God intends. The first forty years, he's the adopted son of pharaoh, grows up in the home of pharaoh in Egypt. Second forty years, he's a shepherd out in the middle of the wilderness of Midian, just obscure. The third forty years, he's called by God to lead God's people Israel out of four hundred years of Egyptian slavery. Oh, by the way, those last forty years, they wander in the wilderness. And Moses leads them up to the edge of the promise. And now listen, this psalm is written during those last forty years. During those forty years of wilderness wandering. In fact, you can read in the book of Numbers how the people of Israel, every single one of them, except for two people perished in the wilderness. And so here's the point, Moses watched an entire generation waste their lives. And so he prays, he reflects, and then he writes this wisdom prayer for us that we might benefit from their folly and learn what God's wisdom looks like to make the most of the limited time that God has given to us.”

Intellectual honesty compels us to just agree together that we have a lot of circumstantial challenges in our lives, but at the end of the day, you choose what you're gonna do with your time. I choose what I will do with my time. And if ever we need God's wisdom, it's right here in learning how to use the limited time that God has given to us according to his wisdom. That that's what we need. And that's what we're gonna see today in Psalm 90. Before we jump in, a little background is very important here. Psalm 90 is in fact the oldest of all of the Psalms, the oldest one. And the superscription above it just simply reads, a prayer of Moses, the man of God. So Psalm 90 verses one through 17 is one long continuous prayer. It's an amazing prayer”

“What's the point? Here's the point. As we're going through life, you've got whatever right in front of you, this difficult thing, this challenge, this season of life, this time. And we look at that, we think that's all there is. But guess what? That's not all there is. God is working in the current thing in front of you from eternity and for eternity, but we don't know how to tell that time. So we want the thing to go away. What God wants is for us to develop an eternal perspective right in the middle of that situation. He wants us to develop an eternal set of values like his, to develop eternal character like his right in the midst of these situations. We just want it to go on. God wants to build eternity into our thinking, our hearts, our character, and the way we live our lives.”

“Here you have God and then you have just sort of like history all laid out in front. Theologians refer to God as transcendent. God is above and beyond. He's not bound up in the sequence of events called time, space, and matter. He's not that you see, he's transcendent. He's far above and independent of it all. Yet on the other hand, God is also imminent. He's knowable. You can experience his presence in time.”
