The psalm spends 60 verses rehearsing stubborn hearts and unfaithful spirits so the past can serve as a warning and a teacher. Left to themselves, people follow the course of this world. Surrendering to the past makes it destiny, and ignoring the past repeats it. The line is sharp: the past must become a teacher, not a home.

Into that dark pattern, God’s faithfulness stands out. Every time Israel was unfaithful, God remained faithful. Verse 38 cuts through the guilt and regret: yet he, being compassionate, atoned for their iniquity and did not destroy them. Atonement means sinners are forgiven instead of destroyed. Romans 5:8 says that while sinners lived under the cloud of their past, Christ died for them. So identity is not defined by worst moments for those in Christ.
